    HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL STUFF UPS

My wife had polio when she was very young, and now has a problem walking which causes her to have falls, some have caused bad injuries in the past bad, Any way a Brisbane surgeons has designed a complete and artificial knee for her and he ensures her that it will have a big positive effect on her walking. After nearly 12 months of research and 3 attempts at getting this implant made correctly she was to have had it fitted yesterday. This operation is a worlds first. She was prepared and got as far as the operating theatre door, when it was discovered that a vital tool needed and made just for the job, was missing where is it? After some frantic phone calls it was found Its either in the USA , UK or Switzerland last time it was sent back for modification the tool was left at the surgeon’s office some time later one of his staff found it and returned it to the manufacture not knowing what it was, where is out of three countries no one knows The implant is worth $55.000 and useless without this tool. Now its another waiting game for us.

Sounds like the best possible outcome, really.
Better than being splayed open, surgeons looking around dumbfounded and wondering how the heck they are going to 'make it work'.
We've all used the incorrect tool on our cars 'in a fix'... am I right?!

Delay is not the best outcome......

But humans are involved....and oversights, mistakes just happen, part of life.

One of my aunts died of tuberculosis back in the 1950's. Her GP had treated her for asthma for years.

    I work in health.
There are plenty of mistakes that cost patients dearly.
You really need to be very health literate, financial and assertive to get the best out of our system.
Especially where the condition and or treatment is not common.

There are certainly times when it is good to have an advocate (preferably a switched on family member).
