Yes, it is nigh to impossible to remove/remount a tyre on a D1 alloy rim without a shop machine

I have punctured three tyres (2 spares and replaced a tube on the third puncture) on the French line 10 years or so ago - no idea why as that is probably more punctures on that trip than the other 40 years of driving Landrovers combined!

I'm with John regarding peace of mind - if you have destroyed one tyre and are in remote country a second spare really helps.

spare tyres - actual times you needed a second spare

I have just completed the Darling River Run and I managed to badly cut a tyre beyond repair at White Cliffs.
I had a good spare and got home without further flats but I won’t be doing another similar trip without a second spare. It just adds unnecessary stress to an otherwise magic experience.

Travelling from broken hill to tibooburra Christmas 2015 with a friend in a Ford rental 'mining' ute. He had two blow outs on the bitumen within 50kms of each other. Took him in to tibooburra in the Defender and we managed to pick up a second hand tyre from TJ's roadhouse which got us back to dubbo and returned the ute to Avis...

happened to us exploring from Wyndham to Gibb River rd after taking a wrong turn at the prison tree and coming out at the Pentecost river. 2 flats and a leaking 3rd tyre on the D1.

I did need 2 spares once on my D2 but that was because the tyres were so badly worn and we were out bush bashing only 100ks from home with a couple of other cars.

I just carry a spare carcass now plus the normal spare and the one on the camper . We use steel rims on the D3 and camper and I have done 6 or 7 tyre swaps with the tyre plyers to make sure it could be done if needed.

There are a few things I would jettison before the 2nd spare if travelling remote , especially if your tyre size is not commonly used on Toyota's

    Cheers Ean

All very helpful, the results have left me with no clear answer. Seems like punctures come in multiples and in close succession or not at all.

i run 315/75 and not found on a toyota unless it is an 80 series and i do a sneaky one while the owner is in the pub. a pair of spares is near on 80kg. That's a lot of red wine and a bottle of sherry for the wife.

Same here, carried two spares on all big trips and particularly in remote areas.

    Never changed one.
I always carry an air compresser and plugs, although haven’t used the plugs ever.

Now I occasionally carry an extra carcass.

I think luck has a bit to do with punctures, and also tyre condition, type, brand, and pressures.
