Most people give me a puzzled look when i talk about a five tyre rotation rather than four, although i do live in a city.

If you are currently doing a four tyre rotation i would need to be convinced you are ready to go outback.

I don't think I ever saw a Western Queensland mail or freight contractor that only carried one spare.

I never do a rotation (until the vehicle is getting new rubber, then the spare either goes on and a new spare fitted or the spare is discarded due to reaching 5 years old).

All my roaded tyres wear evenly, always have.
Not a lot of roundabouts out here!

    Murphys law.
We need a cheap china inflatable pretend second spare then, to double as an inflatable toy for creek swims. Will Murphy be fooled?

I do enjoy comments suggesting I get out more.
I would spend more time on outback roads than many would.

The joys of living where I do and doing what I do.

And related to topic - never used my spare, never carried 2 on my own vehicles. Quality rubber, correct pressures, drive to conditions and scan the surface for potential points of damage.

I must fit into the not ready.....and I’ve done outback trips.

I don’t rotated at all but I have at times moved the front to the back and vice verse.

Once out of the city in rural area or up the beach I’m struggling to recall seeing people touring or getting away for the weekend with mis-matched spares.

And I rarely see cars parked up with flat tyres.....and the odd time there is they seem to be going about the business changing the tyre.

I spend many km’s between Brisbane, Rockhampton, Miles, Tenterfield triangle and don’t see many issues with cars traveling, breakdowns, flats etc.

When i did interstate i saw heaps of flats. The trailers i pulled had retreads, and i did 5 and 6 hour stints at GCM without stopping.

And didn't those super single recaps make a mess of guards and wiring and sidelights when they let go!

My spare is always my best tyre. Period. Doesn't always match the road tyres and I don't rotate it through *gasp* But it is the best (most tread, strongest, most off-roady). If you need it then it has to be at least as good as what's failed or you've just created a problem. Only ever carried one spare. But always carry compressor and plug kit. My 2c

    Retreads are a cost saving.................not.

I got good at butchering the damaged plastic guards off.
