I worked with a guy that went on a 6 week self drive holiday in Europe, he was going to hire a vehicle but they have schemes there where you lease a vehicle for the period and then sell it back, it worked out cheaper

This type of car finance is a trend that is emerging at the moment. Manufacturers have pitched it at the top end of the market. Others are trying the more general buyers. Look up Fair.com who are in the USA and are in process of setting up in Europe. Leaseplan and Wagonex are both operating similar schemes in the UK, Each of these offering is structured slightly differently to appeal for their target customers.

Was looking at running a dual cab ute for a contract which was going to run for 3 months. Reason being that this type of vehicle had significant tax advantages over a car. This type of arrangement had the advantage that I could walk away or change to another type of vehicle after 3 months. Monthly payment was less than a standard 3 year no deposit car loan payment and included insurance and maintenance or renting from a car hire company.

Think is the way of the future for cars as the gig economy does not give people the certainty of income to take a 3 year car loan. With some rentals you can walk away from the rental with only a weeks notice and no more responsibility for the unexpired rental period.

Depending on how the ATO treats it I think it can work as a good option.

As an example my D4 SDV6 cost the company 22k pa to run. The D5 works out at similar numbers because, while it cost more, it is cheaper to run, register (being a 4 cylinder) and service.
