VERY BLOODY ANNOYED

Back in February this year I replaced the front drive shaft in the D2a after getting some vibration. I got a greaseable one from a reputable company in Dandenong Sth.

As many here now, I’m doing a stint in the caravan park in Birdsville at the moment.

Yesterday Ken and I decided to take a drive out to Bedourie on our day off. About 170km away.

About half way there started getting a vibration which rapidly got worse. Stopped the car, got underneath and sure enough, the double cardan had **** itself. This shaft has never been through a river, never done any hard work and is less than 12,000km old! From memory it was $580.

Anyway, luckily I had my tools with me so out it came and we could drive back with the CDL locked in.

Called said company in Dandenong Sth and I have to admit, they were pretty good about it. They’ve agreed to send one up on Monday but.... I have to pay for it until they get the other one back

. They need to assess it they say. Fair enough under normal circumstances but hey, I’m in Birdsville!

Now they’ve agreed to pay the freight for both the new unit and the return of the old one. Not too bad, but I still have to be out of pocket several weeks I imagine to the tune of nearly $600 until they assess the old one and decide it’s not my fault.

Could have been a lot worse. If it gone in the middle of the desert, it would have been a challenge to get back out in 2wd that’s for sure.

What do you guys think, am I being a bit harsh?

i dont think your being harsh and i think the company is being very reasonable. sounds like a good outcome so far.

I don't blame you for being annoyed Wardy.

There is something inherently wrong with the front shaft on D2's.

All sorts of user reasons have been blamed for the failures. I think I have heard them all.

On my 2nd one I redirected the condensate drains , it was greaseable and got greased more than any prop shaft on any vehicle I ever owned and it failed again , so I was on my 3rd shaft(built by British Offroad)when I sold it.

Previous to the D2 I owned a Nissan Pathfinder (imported) and it did almost the exact same work as the D2 without any drive train failures or any of the continuously annoying problems the D2 kept serving up.

There are driveline specialists who will rebuild your shaft for half the price of a Tom Woods one , with same guarantees but its a pain in the arse for you to get it done.

Yeah. Pretty standard practice with warranty claims.

I had a similar issue with a scanner a few years back. Not mine. A customer's.
Thing is, after it was determined it was a warranty issue and a refund was in order, the hardware supplier found out they had no facility to refund. They did offer to make good with printer cartridges but, sadly, they could not supply cartridges for the Epson printers.
Oh, well, not my money and the business (my customer) had no time or inclination to chase it up.

I'm sure you will get your money back, as long as you didn't pay through your phone bill.

Wardy, So what actually went? a uni ( they are consumables) or did the centre bearing go?

Its 100% yhe reason i fit GKN or Hardy Spicer BRANDED shafts only. $580 is definitely an aftermarket one and total rubbish. If you get another then expect another failure.
