This article from the NT will show why indigenous communities learn to not trust the Police. It also shows why the WA Police force has used indigenous Police to try to regain that trust. Time will tell if the police are doing their job.

Bob that place has a lot of 'history'. Some deep rooted problems that WILL NOT be solved quickly. Was through there in 1988 and heard recently that nothing, nothing seems to have changed. Hope something happens for the good of the community from change, however there is a lot to repair...

We live in a culturally diverse world. We all have a lot to learn from each other and we all see the world differently from each other. Harmony in difference is not so difficult with an open mind.
I would happily live in Warakurna with an Aboriginal police force. I’ve been there on many occasions over the past 15 years. It has no more problems / crime (and probably less) than other places in the world where poverty exists, including our big cities. Youth crime can be an issue anywhere and building good relations is always the best solution.

Personally, I think it's not necessarily a bad idea,,, "If it does GET crime rate down", and brings some respect for the police. I can't see why other officers (white) can't be then introduced in to the place and and the same result ensue.
But my question would be, why are the kids so scared of white police in the first place (??).
The only reason they would be hated so much is from adults,, who do do the wrong thing, and are consistently bagging out said police.
Who hate the police most,, those who break the law, or those that do the right thing by the general populous? Ultimately, it boils down to respect,, not just to others, but yourself as well.
In many cases the white man represents oppression, and in early Australia aboriginal interaction with police usually ended up with aboriginals in chains, taken away to places like Rottnest Island, not to be seen again. Yes, these stories would have been passed down , rightly or not, and mistrust of the police would have been ingrown. Read the article in this thread about NT police in Arnhem land, you'll get an idea. Respect needs to be earned, 200years of oppression can not be wiped away overnight. Read a book called " Blood on the Wattle", by Bruce Elder. It'll open your eyes.
