    Arthur Beetson, the man who changed a Nation

    I met the great man, and it was a privilege. Humble, down to earth , much more than just a footballer. This is an old article from his son, but a good one.

    Certainly a great league player and coach etc - made a major contribution to league - but in no way did he change a Nation.

    Beetson was an advocate of indigenous education, he was passionate about indigenous youth finishing school, and using education to improve their life. His leadership resulted in this philosophy being carried forward, after his death. Untold numbers of indigenous youth have been lifted out of hopeless situations to a better life, and if that is not changing a nation I don't know what is. The football competition for Murri Youth brings hundreds of indigenous youth together for a few days of rugby league. Before the games start every player is given a medical examination, for diabetes, heart problems etc. Any problems found are treated, for some kids this is the only way such problems would be discovered. All this from the Arthur Beetson foundation. Arthur Beetson believed in the kids, and he helped them believe. Not just a footballer. He changed young lives.

    Big Artie was influential, if not instrumental in equality for Aboriginals. That is nation changing. All of Artie's achievements were accomplished peacefully and with respect. A great Australian.
