They’re more complicated than you’d think.
With full electronic control of the engine etc.

They’re ok, a bit beige perhaps, and a few quirks like all designs of that era.

Wheel track variation is a pita on sand - friends cruiser flails around in soft stuff more than those with closer F-R track.

Put some good filtration on the fuel system - plenty of them suffering dirty fuel damage.

They have door seals that work! (compared to a defender)
Yes the drivetrain has electronics in it so no avoiding that.
I would be budgeting straight off the replacement rear springs (parabolics or air conversion), new front seats and upgraded radio. They are crap, even in the GXL model.

The track difference front and rear is fixed on the 2018 version. The width are now the same.

But yeah as above, it's full of electronics as well..... The lc 7 series is now equipped with abs and traction control. Even one air bag!

I was thinking about buying one. It's a good truck and will suit your purposes

Airbags in the 70 series cruisers were introduced in about 2012.

In the 2018 brochure,track hasn't been fixed.

Many have them and use them in sand,etc,no worries at all.A few mates have the dual cabs,and tow heavy camper trailers to Fraser,no issues.

Maintenance is fairly high,wheel bearings required to be done every 20K,or no warranty.
Normal services every 10K

Have you checked out the 76 wagon?I test drove one recently and it wasn't bad,much quieter than the Defender,heaps more low down torque,but uses a bit more fuel.

Heaps of aftermarket gear around for them,Tojo reliability and resale is a good point.

Still looking for something to replace the D4 with,not much around.

I know many don't like him, but Andrew St Pierre White did a review last year of his new Troopy. Has some interesting points.

I drove a new one in 2014, doing due diligence 😳 when buying my 2014 Puma. I’d driven earlier models for years for work - nothing had changed. Even the V8 wasn’t that exciting. The Puma is way out in front IMO. More refined, better interior, quieter, way better seats, much better acces with 5 doors, four coils, centre difflock, bigger chassis, better economy, more stable on and off road. The only things I like about the Troopy are, the aircon is better, the drivers airbag and bigger load space if you really need it. Otherwise the Puma wins hands down IMO.

They’re both around the same price second hand. I’d buy a puma unless you really want a brand new one.

x2 on the 76 wagon, a great truck and although not as big the access via the rear doors is a big plus over the troopy.
If the 2019 Defender is a let down I will seriously be looking at one.
