Only time I mowed the lawns without steel caps was 20 odd years ago, I dragged the mower back over my foot and it cleanly removed the top of my leather hiking boots leaving me looking horrified at my thankfully unscathed sock with toes still soundly attached inside - Never been close to doing it again and I was mightly ****ed off I'd wrecked my good hiking boots when the shock wore off.

Also hit my foot with an axe when it glanced off the wood I was chopping - my sock and foot weren't so lucky that time - wrecked an old pair of sneakers and much blood ensued... 😁

Both times I was off with the fairies daydreaming rather than concentrating on the task - probably why I've never had an accident with a chainsaw as I was always on my game when using one (and I had 3 at one stage and used them several times a week for work and at home)

I love my stihl helmet, visor and muffs. I keep balking at buying chaps but I know I should.

I saw a great article that showed stats on chainsaw injuries and their location. What is most surprising was the most injuries are to the hands. Steel caps are good for ensuring you cut you foot off instead of you toes but I still wear them.

In all honesty the only reason I wear the chaps is because they were given to me by my father in law. He bought a new husky and they threw them in. Being 69 he laughed at the thought of wearing and gave them to me.
I probably would never have bought a pair otherwise $200 is hard to swallow.
They are really warm in winter which is a bonus.

Used to have a surf shop in Point Lonsdale in the 1990's and you could buy double pluggers (Double Dragon) in any size (from baby to biggest mofo) in any colour you wanted............

As long as it was white.

No one else sold them, had people come down from Melby when the word got out. N/A in all white now, but Double Dragon are still going.

From memory he was a greenkeeper in the east or SE of Melb.

Yep you are spot on and very passionate he was as well

Not really a big fan of wearing chaps when I'm out getting firewood.

Still have the old Stihl 021 I bought more than 20 years ago when we first moved to Kalgoorlie. It has never missed a beat, but I recently decided to get something a bit bigger as I have been cutting some larger logs lately. There was recently a special on Husky's, so I bought a 460 Rancher. A very nice saw - does everything I wanted it for.

Because I am also into woodturning, I use chainsaws quite often to cut turning blanks. I do this either in the back yard, or sometimes in the shed - even with the lump of timber mounted up on the lathe occasionally. For this (and garden pruning etc) I recently bought a Ryobi electric chainsaw (240V extension cord job). It has the same length bar (16 inch) and same chain as the Stihl 021, and it actually has more grunt than the Stihl. A real trap for the unwary, as you tend to think of these things as just a lightweight garden tool - instant power when you pull the trigger and very quiet - and can do just as much damage to you as the bigger saws.
