I have always held the view insurance companies could not exist unless they receive more money than they pay out. So logic suggests there must be loosers.
Im a bit like ned flanders in that regard. Insurance is a form of gambling.
Insurance companies make their money by investing the premiums.

Interesting. It depends. I keep the house and cars insured. We went away last year for 3 months ... So I insured the caravan for the time we were away (now cancelled). The issue is the trailers and caravan are VERY expensive to insure ( versus there market value). The caravan is actually worth a lot even though its old ( about $18k probably as its a bunk room caravan). However it lives in a locked shed at home.... And lets be honest, you'd pinch something far more modern and rebirth it.

The trailers, the are home made and very unique looking. No matter how you rebirthed them, they were be EASILY identifiable from the merest glimse out of the corner of your eye ( my box trailer is on an old carvan chassis, the car trailer is made out of an old coolroom).... So fingers crossed, they never dissappear due to them being so easily identifiable even if rebirthed.

I however can never complain about insurance premiums again. Last year when we were away, a hose froze, then burst in our roof. The house was flooded from the top down for at least 4days (that I can work out). The insurance company rebuilt half the house, replaced a lot of the contents. We were out of the house for over 6months. It would have cost them hundreds of thousands of $$$ (even though its only a crappy little house). If we didn't have the insurance, we would now have nowhere to live.

For every feel good story regarding insurance there is many bad ones. Companies fine print preventing people from claiming.
Like acts of god and stuff like that.
Around here loads of people lost everything during the fires thinking they were insured but were infact not.

Its a personal choice i make. If something brakes or gets stolen then its gone. Replace and move on.

My mate was slashing about 10 years ago and hit a rock, the damage bill for his tractor and fire damage was in excess of a $100 000 by the time fencing and other property damage was paid for. There was no houses lost, couple old cars in open farmland. He was glad he had good insurance. My dad said to me when younger, if you cant write a cheque the next day for the total loss you need to insure
    cheers

Not so long ago I built a new trailer for my 20 ft. boat and looking back, when I add up the cost of the rollers, skids, electric winch, tow coupling, wheels, axles, suspension, brakes, mudguards, lights and other bit's and pieces I can understand why they get stolen just for the parts plus the local scrappy would probably relieve you of the incriminating carcass free of charge too.
