    Land Rover Car Sales Crash

    Report in today's Australian.

"Vehicle sales careered off a cliff last month with luxury demand plummeting and imported replacements for former locally built favourites dropping off shopping lists. It was a nightmare month for almost every car maker but especially Land Rover, Audi and Porsche, with sales down by a third compared with last July".

I don't have Land Rover figures in front of me, but if this is correct I certainly understand. No Defender, The iconic Discovery 4 replaced by a generic SUV type model. In the last year I have seen a number of new model Discovery Sport's models, however, I don't recall seeing any Discovery 5 on the road. I suppose I may have seen some but may have assumed it was a Territory coming towards me, lol.

Rather than any direct LR comment it was more a story about the debt laden consumer with dropping house prices, flat incomes etc. making that new car purchase a lower priority.

With a few kids at an expensive school on top it is something I can relate to Land Rover Car Sales Crash

In any case the D5 has given me no anxiety and I’m keenly watching the MY16.5 D4 market.

Having never bought a brand new car vs a 2-3 year old it’s always amazed me how dealers survive. I always thank my new car buying friends profusely for taking the hit for me.

I've seen a few chaps off my SEQLRD group seeling their D4s due to financial pressures.
As per the above the D5 range are very un-inspring for me, especially the price.

My old D3 will soldier on, I figure for the price of a new vehicle I can do an awful lot of repairs. already has a new engine with about 40,000km on it.
Transmission won't be that far far away, 237,000 on it with 2 x flshes to date and will be doing a third this weekend which hopefully cures the TC shudder and I get a bit more life out if it.

Had LCA done about 2 years ago but suspect they are on the way out again. Have not done significant mileage on them either and only two beach trips to Bribie.
I'm also thinking front top and rear top/bottom arms will need doing, I know th air struts do.
Maybe ball joints at some stage? Steering rack ends as I am getting a little left / right deviation in the steering now. Or maybe the steering rack itself?

Yes a nice expensive little list but would rather spend $15k to bring it back up to scratch then spend around $100k on a new vehicle or $85k on a MY16 D4 (drool, drool )

Yeah I too am amazed (and thankful) at new car buyers happy to take the financial hit. Now I can’t depreciate the car for work I bought a D4 over the D5 with the backup/repair funds in the mortgage saving me money not costing me. So far it’s been a dream.

I think LR have made a big mistake not launching the defender close to the D5.

Agreed. But they’ve obviously been struggling with how to get the icon right!

This is an interesting discussion re depreciation.

Since 2016 end of production Defender prices have increased.
EG: if you purchased a new Defender in 2013 for $50k it would still be worth at least that today.

If you purchased a 2013 D4 today after it had depreciated it would cost approx $50k
What was the new price of s D4 in 2013? $70-80K?

I’d buy the Defender today for $50 k.

Its a rare occurrence but Defender has continued to defy the odds for decades. It’s a design icon that has preferenced unique design integrity over creature comforts. Handbuilt over mass production. Better for the environment, your wallet and not conforming to the mass market.

I doubt the next Defender will achieve that if it’s aiming to compete with the Hilux! but we can only hope.

Well another great day if not stormy in Bunbury Western Australia yesterday, as the new signage for the NEW Landrover outlet was erected .it has been years since the last Landrover dealer closed down but is great to see them here again on Bunburys car yard strip.
I do have to admit in the time that the Disco 5 has been on sale I have only seen around 6 on the road from Augusta in the south to Perth as I travel very frequently in these areas.
The Discovery 3 and 4 are still very popular down in this area.
The new Range rover Sport and Disco Sports are the most prolific (new) Landrover vehicles in the South west.
I myself have a Puma Defender and D3 both great cars but with the D3 which my wife loves is starting to get long in the tooth. The Defender, Im hanging on to.
Just like alot of people ,I am waiting with baited breath for the new Defender but if Landrover have got it wrong I feel that will be the end of the Defender.
If its right I could be in the market!
    Jeff.
