    Buying overseas - GST?

Hi, I know this has been covered in other threads, but this isn't about ebay or anything. I normally buy from Australian suppliers but I need a large, expensive item that I can't get locally (to the same quality).

I've asked the supplier about shipping to Australia - no dramas, they will charge me ex VAT prices, but how does is the GST payable on this? Even though it is chargeable on all transaction now, the purchase will be over $1000 anyway - I don't want to get it confiscated when it lands here and am happy to pay the GST on it - but how does this work?

    TIA.

Shipping companies do this multiple times every day of the week already. Your freight lands in Oz and you receive an invoice from the local freight agent for handling, customs and GST. Once you've paid up the freight moves out of customs and eventually you get it delivered.

Its really a hap hazard system, when i generate a customs entry on low value goods no GST is applied, i'm only aware of the over 75K model where clients will be billed annually any gst payable for low value (SAC ) entries.

Shipments with a value over 1k AUD its business as usual.

Just make sure your phone and email are included on your invoice so that the freight agent has no difficulty contacting you. For the two shipments I had last year I was asked to pay by credit card, once the payment is approved they can get the freight moving again. They don't want to spend much time on each freight so quicker is better for them.
