    Mid Air Close Call!

Was out cleaning my car no more than 10 minutes ago.
    Beautiful sunny clear day.
Hear a plane overhead so check it out.

Hmmm its 2 planes. One going south and the other south west.

I will be damned if the 2 planes did not nearly hit each other!!

Directly overhead of me the 2 merged. One was slightly higher or they would have collided right above me!

Im not kidding! They were perhaps 50 metres apart. Unless its some sort of airshow thing going on i dont know of this is just insane.

Literally thought i was going to have to get in the car and drive to a crash.

Both planes did look similar. White small planes like a 12 seater or something. They were not high either.

I watched them for a few minutes and they both continued on there flight paths as if they did not even know they nearly collided.

Seriously freaked me out just now.

I dont know much about the rules etc but imagine this close a call is totally illegal and if there is any way for the authorities to know this ie radar then there in big trouble.

I assume they both left Traralgon at around the same time. I assume this because of there altitude at the time.

I WISH i had a phone with me. I have to assume others seen this around Churchill also.

perhaps worth pointing out that it is notoriously difficult to judge either height from the ground or height difference. If they were below 10,000ft and in uncontrolled airspace, legal vertical separation is 500ft, which is likely to look like not much from the ground.

On the other hand, an overtaking aircraft slightly higher has a large blind area forward and to the right, so close approaches unknowingly are possible. When I was learning to fly, I had just landed at an uncontrolled airrport and turned to backtrack along the taxiway, when the instructor next to me grabbed the microphone and yelled out to a particular plane to "go round", which he did - he had almost landed on top of the plane next behind us. After we parked, the offender landed, and my instructor stormed over to him when he stopped to say a few words - and was taken aback when the offender slid back the canopy and stood up, revealing his clerical collar!

They were nothing like 10k feet mate. Try 1/4 of that. I live about 12ks (as the crows fly) from the Airport assuming they left from there.
We often have low flying planes here. Normally just the small things. Sesna or whatever there called lol.

Both planes looked similar in size and traveled about the same speed.

At 2,500 feet above you it is almost impossible to tell if two aircraft are at the same height. Slightly easier if they are identical, but even then the eye is not up to assessing the difference in size. Human vision estimates distance of objects by binocular vision out to about ten metres, and beyond that by comparison with objects of known size and distance. Neither of these is useable in this instance.

On another occasion, while in the circuit area at a small airport near Melbourne, I saw another aircraft off to the left, apparently several miles away. It suddenly went into a spin, and I realised that in fact it was a model aircraft (It spun a lot faster than a full size one) and I had been in a near collision with it. It was flying illegally not only above the allowed altitude, but in close vicinity to an airfield. (On this subject, in the USA, last year an airforce helicopter struck something in prohibited airspace in the New York area. Investigators recovered debris of a quadcopter from one of the turbine intakes, and were able eventually to identify the make and serial number. And the manufacturer had the customer's details.)

    MAN I WISH I HAD A CAMERA!!!!!

2.5k feet was a guess. I really have no idea how high they were. Perhaps an inch big to my eyes in the sky. Maby more. Dunno how that equates to distance and what not. had they been banking i would have seen the windows if that helps.
They were low. They were loud enough i stopped what i was doing to look up after all.
Low though man, like most around here are low. I think... but dont quote me they fly from Traralgon south to the coast then west to Melbourne? Really not sure but it does appear that way.

The distance from Traralgon has to be some sort of indicator. How high would you likely get in one of these little birds if you flew 12kms away from the airport?

Last time i got upto 10k feet in one of these planes it took up AGES!! Like 30 minutes of circling the landing zone before they would let me jump the hell out.
