Good luck Cliffy and a speedy recovery![]()
I am writing this not as a oh poor me, But I am sure that there are many others out there in everyday life that are suffering the same problem and putting it down to old age. I am 72 and my treating specialist say I am one of the lucky ones that found the problem so young and early in life. Its not only males that this can effect by this problem.
I THOUGHT I WAS JUST GETTING OLD AND TIRED
BUT
At the start of this year I started getting tired during the day more so than usually, I found it difficult to get to sleep at night , my joints were not without pain just doing minor everyday tasks around the yard, was not without some kind of unnatural body reaction within myself. The tiredness, along with a lot of loss of interest and unable to concentrate on a task. I put down to age and lack of fitness.
Then came 4 months of sickness in and out of Greenslopes Hospital and after another week in hospital with several blood tests, it was discovered that my blood had excessive calcium in it. Then came countless x-rays , scans , MRIS even after discharge I was recalled for some more test and ex-rays etc.
I was referred to a specialist who informed me I was suffering of what is known as Parathyroid sicknes. This sickness will long term kill you, but before doing so will destroy your way of life and that a lot of elderly people don’t realise they have it, as most symptoms can be natural in the elderly , Things like slow loss of memory which I realised was suffering from, server constipation, kidney stones, strokes, heart attacks, short tempered , extremely fragile bones and oxeoprouis the list is nearly endless, a solid small lump has grown in my left palm everybody is effected differently but there are many common symptoms
My specialist then sent me to a more professional??? Ex-ray centre for more scans, ex-rays, MRIs etc to confirm and get the required photos to guide the operation. (7 hours in an ex-ray centre) Then to a ENT Specialist, more blood test .
On the 4th Oct I go under the knife for a small operation to remove the guilty parathyroid and hope wellness will follow

Sounds a bit like my wife (73).
Thanks.
Geeze am I looking forward to old age. You read all these sort of topics and can`t wait to get old, suppose I`m some of the way there already as I`m 57. Already feeling older, hand hurts typing on the key board thanks to arthritis. There are some sneaky illnesses out there. My father had a liver condition. Iron built up and caused cancer of the liver. Symptoms where what you would expect in a older person. If they had found out early all he would had to have was a tablet. Was of cause until the later stages that the doctors realised it was more than old age.
Cheers Hall
Good luck with it Hodgo, I'm sure there are many on here with issues to deal with. I've certainly got mine😩

Calicum, I have a problem that it blocks my kidneys with Calcium stones, I can no longer take vitamin supplements. Many many moons ago on the Gold Coast I had a fall and hurt myself. I went to the local hospital and they informed me I was low on calcium and should take supplements. Now it is doing damage. WTF.
They seem to warn older people to beware of brittle bones from loss of calcium and take supplements, I suppose that if the calcium doesn't go to the bones and hangs in the blood it would not be good for you.
Thanks for that information. Its good you had a checkup and they identified it.
My wife has a problem where she can't absorb Vitamin B and has to have regular injections. It doesn't sound much, but without the injections she has many problems.
Its important to keep on top of our health.
