Thinking of getting a mobility scooter?

As, judging from recent posts, some are getting to that age.
Fears mobility scooters being used to dodge booze bus Senate inquiry hears - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    From the article:
It (the inquiry) has recommended nationally consistent regulation of the "devices" and further consideration of whether drivers should be required to get insurance, register their vehicles, and apply of a licence in order to get behind the wheel.
Stakeholders also raised the issue of personal responsibility, arguing safety was not the sole responsibility of the scooter driver.

"Stakeholders argued that pedestrians not watching where they are going, people texting or talking on phones, bicycles and skateboards travelling too fast, and vehicles blocking footpaths can also pose a danger," the inquiry report found.

Why not the licence and insurance ? Seems a few out there think it should be so for bicycles. Then as a vehicle perhaps seat belts , a roll over protection apparatus or even a helmet ? If I can get done for traffic violations on my pushy the same for the scoots.
One day I will get one but with luck it will be powered by a 1000 cc motorcycle engine 😈

    Air bags.
    Seat belts.
    Crumple zones.

Oh, the mobility scooters should be made to conform to the ADRs. I'm sure those headlights aren't right.

Once again this shows the insanity of the registration and licensing rules, esp in Qld

In Qld, Motorised mobility devices which fit the criteria have to be registered, but it’s free.
But then it also includes CTP insurance - so everyone else is subsidising this...

(If yours goes too fast it can’t be registered, and therefore can only be used on private property)
Too fast is defined as over 10 km/h

But then, under the road rules - anyone on a mobility device is considered a pedestrian.

Which means you can use footpaths and bikeways, and the road itself if required but can’t drive like a car does.

There’s no law against ‘drink walking’ yet but wait for the reaction if people are using these devices to actively get around drink driving laws....

I thought you could already booked so not sure what the issue is. Maybe the cops just need to be instructed to stop and breath test granny in her power scooter/wheelchair.

Have you read the road rules?
    https://www.pcc.gov.au/uniform/Austr...9March2018.pdf

I think it is interesting reading.
    15 What is a vehicle
    A vehicle includes:
    (a) a motor vehicle, trailer and tram; and
    (b) a bicycle; and
    (c) an animal-drawn vehicle, andan animal that is being ridden or drawing a vehicle; and
    (d) a combination; and
    (e) a motorised wheelchair that can travel at over 10 kilometres per hour (on level ground); but does not include another kind of wheelchair, a train, or a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy.
    18 Who is a pedestrian
    A pedestrian includes:
    (a) a person driving a motorised wheelchair that cannot travel at over 10 kilometres per hour (on level ground); and
    (b) a person in a non-motorised wheelchair; and
    (c) a person pushing a motorised or non-motorised wheelchair; and
    (d) a person in or on a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy.
i.e. If you are in a mobility scooter that is capable of traveling up to 10km/h, you are a pedestrian. If you are in a mobility scooter that is capable of traveling over 10km/h, you are a driver.

Used to live on the south coast below London. This is English retire by the sea country with an average age I would guess of about 70. Local paper had plenty of hit and run accident stories. Took me a while to realise they were talking about mobility scooters not cars!!!!
