Thread: Those shark attacks in the Whitsundays

Just like the Jaws movie mate, it is all about the tourist dollar. 'Don't spook the tourists'. And now that someone has been bit, kill a shark or four and tell the tourists that all is well.

Six sharks removed.......won’t that make room for six more to move in.

Typical knee jerk reaction from the pollies. Kill everything and sit back and enjoy the applause. Stupid posturing politics.

It's the Sharks home, we invade it then complain, just like cocs same thing, they were there first for thousands of years before we came along. What about those dangerous jelly fish, cull them all also? no, we know to keep out of their way when they are around. If you want to swim in dangerous waters go to the hotel pool.

I swim, dive, surf. If I get to see a shark I view it as lucky. If I get bitten bugger but don't kill it.

Glad the two who got bitten are recovering and not having a go at them in any way.

One boater complained about not being told, then went on to say he had his radio turned off. I wonder how many of those boats reported to the Coast Guard/ VMR [ whichever organisation is responsible for the area]as they were going out , as to boat name, size, no. of souls, destination and, if necessary, approximate return time. All boaties should have their radio on, on the general call channel, to pick up on important messages from the relevant authorities. If the person who took the video of sharks feeding on the whale carcass had informed the Coast Guard/ VMR, or water Police even, two people critical in hospital, with months of physio & pain ahead, may still be enjoying their holiday.

It's actually a requirement of having a VHF operators licence (required to use a set) that you monitor Ch 16 (and any boatie taking any care would do that anyway). Cheers

If you need to be told that there are sharks in the water you shouldnt be swimming there, Tiger sharks have Always been in the sea in that area and the chances of coming across one are pretty high.
Playing the blame game is BS.
