Patreon (Patron) are you a creator or subscriber

I’ve been following one couple overland around the world, every week they upload a video to YouTube which I look forward to.......

No videos for the last three weeks, I assume they haven’t been able to upload...figures or was the area they are in.....

Than i got thinking, they also plug subscribing as a Patron to hep fund there travels so off I go and have a look. Yep the three weekly videos are available to patrons......

    Grrrrr....

I totally recognize the effort they go to in making the weekly videos.....I certainly appreciate them but I’m not sure I want to start paying. They say you get to see the video before it’s posted to YouTube but I’m wondering given it’s three weeks delay i’m wondering if they only be available to subscribers on Patreon

Currently I follow two overlanders and the others has just created a Patreon account, hopefully they still keep uploading to YouTube

The 1st guys are $1/episode and the others are $3/episode although are currently uploading to YouTube each week which doesn’t cost anything.

Looks like I’ll have to track down other overlanders for my weekly fix.

I currently pay monthly subs to 6 of my favourite Youtubers, but they don't hide thier content like that - most will release their videos a few days early for Patreon members only before making it live on youtube to everyone else, and a few of them put small Patreon only updates in with sometimes some bonus material. I pay $1 a month to each of these people.

What your creators seem to be forgetting is that they may also be losing revenue by not uploading as well as not getting their videos recommended to anyone elses feed.

I would dump anyone (and have) that went to a Patreon only feed. It's greedy and does no one any favours.

I've noticed that a lot of American podcasts are actively pushing the monetisation of their previously free media. Rupert would be proud of them.

I'm thinking that free-to-air media will rapidly disappear as fees for so called "patreons" become compulsory.

If people are producing items of worth they deserve to get some recompense - however this "patreon" system works in a different way - "pay us first and see if you like what you get".

The BBC has now introduced a different approach - by including paid ads if listerners/subscibers are outside the UK.

In Oz, the ABC is reportedly planning for the end of free radio broadcasting, the replacement being paid podcasts and internet radio. They plan for the end of free-to-air radio in remote areas - not enough demand apparently.

I’ve only just stumbled across it.....since getting my head around it

will wait and see how long they delay the weeklys......

Yes it’s a fine balance they have to come up with......

Before I commit I’ll probably look around to see if there are any other I like first.

We live in a strange era whereby virtually every aspect of life is commercialised and commodified...except, we seem to think that all Creative content should be free!

As someone who works in the creative industries, I can tell you that this approach is not only unsustainable, it also kills creativity.

Paying for something creative before you’ve seen it, used to be normal practice - think going to the movies.

It’s simple. If those of us producing creative content aren’t paid fairly to do so, there will be no quality creative output. It’s the same whether film, TV, visual art, dance, music, theatre, design, etc. In the context of adventure travel videos, the makers can choose to put them out for free but ultimately quality will depend on creativity being properly valued.

Free youtube videos can drive subscriptions, but ultimately free is only a preview of the real thing. Unless of course watching homemade social media based narcissism is all you want to see. LOL

    Good points Zeros.....

Both the guys I follow the quality has really increase, especially for one.

I’ll probably subscribe to one may two.....but I think I’ll look around a little harder to who else is out there before I commit.

Yes some of the stuff on YouTube is less than average.

But relying on viewers to pay you to create is why the film industry has a problem,,

Lots of creative people in TV land, and guess who they rely on for their bread and butter??

This method of gathering creative dollars takes Me right out of the equation,, all I have to do is
    find it
    and Like it.

There are no plans for any of this at the moment - was listening to ABC this morning. These are just a couple of things from a huge list on a discussion paper. Unless they change the ABC's charter they cannot even begin to plan this, but there will be changes for sure at some point.

Can’t see the ABC. Going to a paid subscription method - it would change the dynamic - as soon as you take money for advertising there is an expectation of a return .

I listen to a couple of authors whose business model was the release all content for free , you can buy the book before it’s has completely released and listen for free

I’ve bought the books / artwork and merchandise and listened for free .

The author has topped the New York Times bestseller list more than once , when he started the publishing industry dropped him and said “ it will never work “
13 years on, it still works !
I’ve no issue with paying for YouTube , but it has to be good . FTA tv is getting crapper by the week , all reality rubbish - which must be scripted - good looking , bad egg , battler etc .

However the ABC hasn’t let me down , good content ,well produced .as Zeros said - those creative minds cost money !
SBS is another channel - part of the ABC too .

    How would they know that?
    It's "broadcast".
How do they know I listen to ABC in the car for many hours a week?
