A couple of months ago the thermostat in my 11year old 315 L Hardie Dux died, for AFAIR the second time.
It had melted near one of the terminals for the element from a bad connection and distorted the over temp contacts.
I bought a new thermostat from Reece and at the time noted that it had a yellow surround to the temperature selector rather than red and it's minimum was 60C rather than 50C.( even though the scale read down to 50C, you could not turn it further than 60C.)
It lasted 5 weeks.
They replaced it no problem with another with a yellow surround and 60C minimum.
I bought another on line for half the price with a red surround that did go down to 50C.
I became a bit concerned seeing my 2year fixed electricity contract expires on 8/10/2018 and it had about a 30% increase in off peak 1 rates so I logged the Kw usage overnight.
For the 60C thermostat the usage was 6.8Kw over night. YIKES! At that rate my bill would be $90 for hot water only.
So I fitted the 50C thermostat and first night usage was 1.2Kw , as I guess the water was hotter at start up .
Last night the usage was 2.5 Kw.
So what a difference 10C makes.
Am I anal?

Isn't it supposed to be set at 60deg to kill the legionella bacteria??

If you tend to run out of hot water 60deg will get you further than 50deg.
I like your thinking though.
If you really want to save money insulate it. You dont have to spend money to insulate it if you dont want to. Find some old batts or foam or whatever and make it work yourself.
I once had a bar fridge that ran almost all the time. Shoved a few thick layers of cardboard around the sides and on top and then it hardly ran.
AFAIK plumbers are not legally able to put in a HWS and have it set over 60C in case some unfortunate incident happens (Dad / Mum / etc / etc comes home from the pub on a Friday night with the raffle prize and an elegant sufficiency) and gets in the shower and forgets to turn the cold tap on.

In NSW I understand that all new houses have to have a "tempering valve" which limits the water temperature to 55C maximum. In other words the valve automatically adds cold water to prevent scalds, particularly on children. So if you have the thermostat over that then you are just burning money, as long as you don't use all of the hot water.
Seeing I don't usually use all the hot water in the system I go a bit cooler. There are only two of us and we have camped long enough to have 5 minute showers. The Grandkids are another matter! Both SWMBO and I find 50C to be ideal for a hot shower if just a little too hot.
Up until now or October 8th to be precise My usual Off Peak 1 bill has been $27, but the new tariff I am under is 30% higher and the daily charge is 30% higher.

Hi,
If you never run out of hot water the system is costing you more to run.
Think Goldilocks!
Not too hot, not too cold, but just right.
Cheers
