    Subaru

Not quite the forum for this question, but I knew a few forumites have Subarus and can probably answer this question.

I've got an early '90s Liberty AWD. I had to take it out for some dirt road driving while the 130 was in the shop. Ha Ha, led a pack of Hiluxes down the track to the farm, we were screaming down there no worries, straight through the mud, had to stop every once in a while to wait for them to catch up. Hmm, maybe it was 'cos I drive that road all the time. Naaah, Hiluxes, bah.

So, a couple of times I put the Liberty into low range and an orange light lit up on the dash. I don't have the handbook, so couldn't work out if it was just a low-range light or if it was some warning light. Ah, it also turned on intermittently, so probably not just low-range.

Also, can anyone tell me how the Liberty AWD system works? Is it a cdl, etc?

    Cheers
    Simon

I think the light is to let u know u are in low range... been a long time since i have driven a liberty (mate had one) as far as the drive line goes I had a 97 impreza AWD didn’t have low range but I think they all ran on a liquid centre (viscous)

Btw the Liberty was great in drags as you could take off in low range then shift to high range on the fly doubling yr forward gears very few std v8’s could beat it

Yes, it is a low range warning light. It is not uncommon for the switch on the gearbox to fail or work intermittently.

Many of the 90s on awd subarus have a similar awd system as the freelander ie a Vicsous Coupling that provides the slip between front and rear wheels but locks automatically when required (some have other systems as well) many of the Subys though have the adavantage of a low range as well.
