Arc Welding UV Radiation

Hi,
Thus the saying, "blind as a welder's dog".

I heard of pipe welders having to shield the working area with tarps to protect a mob of curious cows.

This is true. A friend's son was an apprentice panel beater/motor painter. He has been on the disability pension since age 20 with plastic lungs from not taking or being provided with suitable safety equipment when spraying two pack paints. Got a big compensation payout for employer negligence but he would much rather be able to breathe.

I did it 6 days before my wedding 49.5 years ago.
Bloke next door had an Anglia and wanted to fit full synchro box, which required cutting crossmember and adding angle iron to brace.
I knew of friend who had stick welder so we went over there but he was out. So never having welded before I set about welding with an old manual helmet . Trouble is I didn't know about amps etc and the stick kept on well sticking.

Every time I had to flip the helmet to start again so ended up with flash burns. Had to wear sunglasses up to wedding day. SWMBO was not impressed. At least it taught me respect for welding.
I am not much better at it now but at least have an auto helmet.

Also been there done that :firedevil: You learn by your mistakes . I also ended up with the same result spray painting the inside of a steel boat using Tar Epoxy in shorts & singlet. Was OK until I went out into the sun & the paint started to cook me. :firedevil: Another one I have never done again.

Yeah, you think you have all the safety procedures in place, then the world creates a better idiot to prove you wrong.
In the incident I mentioned, the employer was completely negligent. It's a truly disturbing story.

I managed to chip off some arc welding -still red hot -slag which decided to go between my socks & boot. Very nasty deep burn from that one, so long trousers since then.

Too true but I guess people are very uneducated these days with certain things. In that instance the poor kid clearly had no briefing or training of any sort, and was learning unsupervised...very sad.

Thought id update the photo...my leg is absolutely killing me. Shorts been rubbing on it all day doing my head in. My arms pretty burnt but it hasn't started hurting yet.
I used to have a spare pair of pants in the car, better put them back in. Looks like I'm Neapolitan ice cream for a week or so hahaha. My feet never see the light of day, my wife reckons they look like a dead persons feet lol

My tafe instructor said that welding radiation is 40x sun exposure. 1hr welding exposure is equivalent to 40hrs sun exposure at the beach [emoji852]
