On my way to work yesterday i hit one of our neighbours dogs, they live 2 doors down. I wasnt going any faster than 60 when i was approching their gate (which was wide open which doesnt really matter they dont even have a fence) the mother of the guys wife was walking the kid to the bus stop and hadnt even gotten out of the driveway yet when the dog ran out in front of me from the other side of the road (house is on left dog came from the right from under a tree) i hit the brakes (was in the laser not the disco) and seemed to slide for ever i eventually struck the dog quite hard but had wiped off most of my speed. The dog is ok only a bruised shoulder. Our vet lives 5 houses down so i drove down and got her and she took it in, she was ****ed off cause this comes after their other dog was wandering around on the freeway and was hit and had to be put down.
On my way home he was inspecting my skid marks which were longer than usual because the road is covered in loose gravel. I stopped and got out of the car
"Going a bit quick were you mate?" he says to me.
"No more than 60, i just hit the loose gravel and kept sliding" i said
"Come off it, look how long your skid marks are, its a 50 zone"
"Its not a 50 zone, technically its a 110 zone as there are no speed signs reducing the speed so i consider 60 to be sensible" i replied.
"Oh well the dog is ok thats all that counts"
It ****es me off that this guys is blaming me and accusing me of driving to fast (when i wasnt) to make himself feel better about not locking his dog up securely enough. I felt bad enough about hitting the poor dog but to cop that when i got home didnt make me feel any better. Matt

that’s fooked!! We have a neighbours who lets there dog roam the streets!!
She a beautiful 7 yr old lab smart as hell but still she crosses a very main road, buses, trucks cars and hoons!! I go out and grab her almost on a daily basis!!! Errrr!!!! The problem is my neighbour is a great guy it’s his daughter and wife that leave the gate open and I just don’t want to get involved. I once found her down at the local shops (2 k’s away) so I put her in my car and bought her home. Some ppl just shouldn’t have pets (and kids for that matter)
That would be right. At least the dog is ok. Hope there isn't much damage to your car either.
The guy is lucky i'm not an arse who would do that, there wasnt much damage to the car but i could send him the bill for a new headlight and indicator if i really wanted to. The car is a piece os ****, the low beam now doesnt work and neither does the indicator. The indicator just needs a new bulb by the looks of it, but the mounting for the headlight is broken.Originally posted by incisor

I agree Mick some people shouldnt be allowed to have pets, to have your dog 2km away at the shops and not notice or even care is disgusting. We have 5 dogs and know where they are at all times. Matt

My Mum witnessed an accident similar to yours. A dog ran out in front of a young guy on a motor bike. He swerved to miss the dog but crashed his bike in the process (Mum was following behind the bike).
Mum made sure the dog owner offered to pay for the guys damage. We didn't follow it up so don't know if they ever did or not.
I find descrete phone calls to the dog catcher will help them change their attitude and look after the animal.Originally posted by mickrangie

Local fine here is $80.00 for "Dog roaming at large"
You only need a couple of them to change your thinking.
Start ringing the Dog Catcher, you dont need to give a name.
Cheers
Mike
Next time, swerve to miss the dog and try and hit the neighbour instead!

Neighbour learned to lock their sheep up after I waited till the last second to lock the brakes up at their sheep entering my block. Scared the poo out of their daughter who was just standing there watching the sheep. No signage. Local ranger had a chat with them and now no more problems.
Same in NSW. Hope you and the dog are both OK.Originally posted by incisor
