It's probably one of those things that's ok to do until someone wrecks it for everyone else by leaving a mess, making noise, etc but if you screen who you take you should minimise this. Make sure if you do, put down that it is mandatory to bring Toilets for all or you'll have little holes everywhere...
I'd pay $20 for a night for a couple. That's the same or close to an unpowered site at Caravan park (off peak) where you get showers and flushing toilets. More than that and I wouldn't personally, but I see a lot that are $15 to $20 per night, per person - that gets a bit steep really quickly for a family IMO.
I just set my van up yesterday for our annual camp. We will be camped from 26th to 1st. cost was $30 for a family of five, no charge for the days before while we airnt there. Been camping there for every year for 30 plus years. It is run by nation parks Tasmania and they will come in at least once to give the youger kids a package with coloring in book etc and also explain all abouts the local fauna etc
How good is that for $30

Also add they comment over the years we leave no trace even though some camps have had 50 humans and 30 dogs, only ever really used 2 sites for our annual camp
I've got a block in snake valley near ballarat I was thinking of renting out to campers. It has a flushing drop toilet and some good spots to set up camp. It's right near the state forest, you can 4x4, dirt bike ride and explore all the old mine shafts.
Maybe this year I'll get up this year and set it up a bit better and start renting it out. [emoji848][emoji848]
There was a news article a while back related to farm camping up in the northern NSW area where the Council was prosecuting the owner - did not have relevant permits, activity zoning (farm only), environmental clearances and no business insurances - the owner then tried to continue with no fees so not then technically a business activity but friends visiting but the precedent had been set - so not so clear cut.
