    University fees

Thanks for the reply’s have made it much clearer for me.

Problem was that based on what I could find on the internet compared to here it all seemed be too ‘cheap’ compared to UK so thought there must be something I was missing.

UK is £9K per year for university costs. All courses cost the same. Then you can perhaps obtain further assistance for living costs which while means tested is also repaid out of future income.

While born overseas made sure kids were registered as Australians and have the passport so they at least had the options for later in life.

Australian universities are well regarded over here so this could work well for them either way if we do make the move.

Then Centrelink takes that into account as you have to report your earnings fortnightly and if over a their specified allowable earnings they reduce. your aus study amount.

There has been whispers of privatizing Hex dept, depends on election. Good chance Scumo will get back in and with Abbot and the far, far right running the show it could happen sooner than you think.

If you mean per year, then yes. As mentioned, you don't (have to) pay anything at the time, you just accrue a HELP (HECS) debt.

In my experience, most students are ineligible for Austudy as their parents own assets that are too valuable (i.e. a modest house), or have income too high - hence the jobs.

$6-$12k may be the posted course costs but for most degrees it can be anything from $20k-$70k in total costs depending on what you are doing. For example I was thinking of completing a degree in Paramedical Studies (already Diploma level), Most universities quote around $9k but there are loads of hidden costs and most that have done it have advised me it will be more like $25-$35k. As I dont actually need a degree for my job I am not going to commit to that sort of money. I do know there is some credit for my current level and real world experience.
Make sure you check the total costs first with someone that has done the courses your kids are considering.
