There was another one which helped my family pay nearly all medical and pharmacy bills...we were a large family.

It was the GUOOF...Grand United Order of Oddfellows , I assume was/is a lodge. Can't recall what dad had to do with it , it may have been religious as dad was a lay preacher.

I'll have to look it up now.

yes it was a lodge and somewhere there was a United Friendly Society which paid our medical and pharmaceuticals . I remember a UFS Dispensary and mum sending me up the street on my treadly to get stuff to treat whoever was sick.

I didn't see any reference to UFS operating today...it was better than any medical insurance or anything similar operating now.

    Regalia, rather than medals.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Possibly they weren't interested in making millions in profit for the members & today they are only interested in that only for the shareholders & so were victim of a takeover for a US, French, UK, China et al multinational company.

A small one, to which we were members did exactly that. Rates went through the roof & service seemed to become a dirty word.

The buff club in Darwin has been where it is on the Stuart hwy for as long as I can remember ( I reckon about 1980 was first time I really noticed it but am sure it was there for longer than that ), been in there many times but never thought about what it’s origins were. I actually thought it was some territory thing , bit like humpty doo.

    Cheers Ean

Most people would recall the name 'I.O.O.F. Friendly Society'. International Order of Odd Fellows. Eventually became just another private health insurer, no doubt absorbed into some multinational now.

    This Buffs thing is interesting.

Does it imply members all get around in the Buff? Where do I sign up?
