Found this while going through some stuff today.
Mount Lofty Summit 1957 Series 1, possibly a Weapons Research Establishment (WRE) in the usual B & W "Checkerboard" pattern for ID on the Woomera Range, a Holden possibly a Vanguard & a Vauxhall.
Taken at the Flinders Column a Trig Point & adjacent to the old Mt Lofty Cafe/restaurant which was lost in the 1983 Bushfires.
Site is now all Landscaped, lots of Car parking, paved area around the Column & a High End Restaurant. Popular with walkers coming up the 'mountain' through Cleland Wild Life Park from Waterfall Gully in the Eastern suburbs.
The gear on top of the column was early SA Police 2 way radio which would have given great coverage both sides of the Mount. The company I worked for had a remote operated 2 way nearby which reached out to Kingscote on KI & was received & also received transmitted messages from a Service Vehicle as far away as Tailem Bend Hospital.
The column used to have an Airways Nav Rotating Light Beacon until Adelaide Airport was opened. A similar one was on top of the Shell Building in the city but was dismantled as being confusing with all the city lights in the vicinity once the airport opened.
There was a chain of these lights mounted on Silos & Water Towers all the way to Melbourne to visually guide aircraft in both directions before all the modern gizmos were used. Flight Levels were a lot lower as well.
It was given a Birthday facelift a few years ago & was restored & painted a reflective white.
Now the GRN is used for SAPOL.Mount Lofty Summit Obelisk, Kiosk & Land Rover S1, Holden & Vauxhall circa mid 1950s.jpg
