    Hi,
When 75 Sqn was at RAF Tenga about 1968, the strip was not far from the barracks.
With Mirages and RAF Lightnings doing night flying it was impossible to get enough volume in the TV to listen to anything.
    Cheers

Fortunately we don’t get too many fighters at Richmond but yes aircraft sitting on the flight line with engines running for hours. Even at 11kms away on an otherwise quite night it is very noisy, enough to wake you up.

Had to look that up! Singapore! Would have been awesome.

There was a Mirage at Edinburgh that used to be part of ARDU and they flew it during displays and airshows. Was noisier taxiing then an 18 at full noise on the tarmac.

Come to think of it, alongside the Mirage was a DC3F(?) which also did the same sort of thing. We were involved in putting them on permanent display around the base, (cause clearly mechanics don't have things to fix) but could not spot them after the base redevelopment.

Yeah it would have been! Tried to get side posted one year, but magically it was extended a year for the person already there and then it became civvy, which again magically, that same person got the job.

Lots of neat things in that hanger. Always remember being told to mind my own business and nothing in there (aside GSE) was for me..

I'm curious why aircraft engines need to be run for hours. ^^^^

Is it so the Ground Engineer can stick his little screwdriver in the hole & fiddle with the idle & mixture & suck through his teeth with a knowing look on his mush while shaking his head, (as one does with one's Rideon Mower) or is it like a diesel HGV where even if they stop for a Sarny they keep the engine running, usually right outside one's window?

Some of us need to know.

Maybe, like the SR-71 Blackbird, the C-130 flies so fast, and heats so much, that the metal expands and stops the leaking!

That's a good question, well asked!

Not having anything to do with aircraft directly, I can't be sure. I'm sure there are a lot of system test they need to do during servicing that they can't do in the air or with a powercart/Apu connected.

Im sure there are a few ex or current white or black handers on here that could answer that.

Same with fuel farm systems. Once a week the entire farm needs to be circulated. Fuel test carried out once a fortnight while circulating and the lists go on.

It would all to be with aircraft safety.
