Interesting the causes of fatalities. I have worked in one industry (geophysics) for over fifty years. This involved operations with machinery and explosives, often in remote areas, and including marine operations.

Despite much of this period being before modern OH&S practices, I have never been directly connected to a fatality, in the sense of being in the same work section or having any sort of responsibility. There have probably been less than twenty fatalities in the industry that I have knowledge of over this time (This would include all Australian operations and a lot of overseas ones). Almost all of these have been motor vehicle accidents, one fixed wing light aircraft accident (flew into a hill in VMC, in PNG), and a couple of suicides.

There have been a few close calls, again, mostly motor vehicle accidents, but also one ship fire, and two helicopter crashes, a couple of machinery accidents.

Serious injuries - again, mostly motor vehicles, a few machinery, one explosive accident (that was actually a university operation, not strictly industry).

Maybe its because most women workers are more careful and dont "skylark" like their male counterparts do, Have you ever wondered why there are so many women drivers on dump trucks on minesites?

It’s more to do with what careers people choose. I saw some stats recently where the top 25 most dangerous jobs had few female workers, eg coal miners, deep sea fishermen, oil rig workers, etc. Guys tend to do the three D’s - dirty, dangerous and demeaning jobs for various reasons, and so are at much more risk of injury or death, although the skylarking probably wouldn’t help!

I wonder where the metal trades fit in that table. Fitting & turning and machine shops were once upon a time the most dangerous occupation/workplace.

If you have doubts about the dangers of driving heavy trucks, I suggest you visit the memorial in Gatton sometime and contemplate the 'blood roll of the highways".
