I do own a half decent genset - Kubota 3 cylinder 10KVA - runs fine, but is in a mates workshop at the moment up on a rack as I was doing some work on it and he put it away - then stuck a 30 litre, V12 engine in the way so I can’t get to it and his forklift won’t lift the damn V12 - It was dropped off by a tilt tray. Could probably get his crane truck to reach it, but I’m not up to clambering over the stuff in the way to get it...

Maybe next Summer it will be back here...

Oh well, the backup diesel gennies are finally earning their keep.

Power generators switched on for first time as SA, Victoria suffer through heatwave - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Temporary diesel power generators owned by the South Australian Government have been switched on for the first time, as the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) deals with record-breaking heat conditions across SA and Victoria.

    Key points:

    • Generators have been switched on to deal with pressure on the energy system in SA and Victoria
    • AEMO chief executive says the demand for power has been higher than anticipated
    • It comes as all-time heat records were smashed across South Australia today

The State Government said AEMO ordered the generators to deal with a supply shortfall in Victoria.

Refrigeration and air-conditioning would be the main offenders i recon, with AC leading the way.

So with the addition of charging EV's,i wonder how all this will go?

No-one is going to be so dumb as to arrange all vehicle charging during peak time now, are they? It's trivial in 2019 to build all car chargers with the smarts to talk to the grid, so it will be done. Grid management in 2022 will be substantially different to the lumpen fossil grid of 2002.

We will be fine, just fire up the old reliable dinosaur ICE vehicle thats out the back.....

    Forget the EV

They tried grid management with AC units, and it didn't work, they need some massive improvements.

I know Ev's are totally different, anyway, lets see how they go,whoever they are.

Control of a/c units via ripple control is a whole different animal to control via 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi.

It's interesting reading posts about heat - there is a common misunderstanding but heat kills more vulnerable people than all other natural disasters put together. Deaths in heatwave conditions go off the charts. Just something to be mindful of.

Victorian demand dropped quickly after 6pm. Why generate expensive diesel power when cheaper power is available from next door?

Be interested to see how expensive repairs are going to be, over 100 separate failures across Adelaide tonight. Quote "damage to our equipment" and "extreme weather" being the most common reasons given for failure. Still 13K customers out at this point.
