Incidentally, since we're discussing Australia Day, and following the recent discovery of the grave of Matthew Flinders,  this might be time to mention that some historians believe Flinders was gay.
 He got married,  then immediately sailed away for years, spending his time with his best mate,  who was actually his mate,  and his cat,  which was the first cat to circumnavigate Australia. 
He went home to London just in time to write his book and then died. His wife hardly knew him. 
Would our social conservatives be shocked if our famous explorer was gay? After all,  there was a lot of buggery going on on sailing ships in those days,  with large crews crammed into small spaces.
