Incidentally, since we're discussing Australia Day, and following the recent discovery of the grave of Matthew Flinders, this might be time to mention that some historians believe Flinders was gay.
He got married, then immediately sailed away for years, spending his time with his best mate, who was actually his mate, and his cat, which was the first cat to circumnavigate Australia.
He went home to London just in time to write his book and then died. His wife hardly knew him.
Would our social conservatives be shocked if our famous explorer was gay? After all, there was a lot of buggery going on on sailing ships in those days, with large crews crammed into small spaces.

A former Premier here (Don Dunstan) was gay, he also wore pink shorts into Parliament & also married a Malaysian women who was also allegedly gay. Whether Matt was, will forever remain a bit of a mystery I suppose.


I have always had a mental image of him poring over the relevant charts in his cabin & doing the maths but who knows, the chart table could have seen some man on man action in his spare time.

It would have been quicker for her had she nicked a loaf of bread cooling on a window sill back in the UK & got Transportation to the Colonies..[biggrin]

The trip home was more leisurely, with a six year stopover in Mauritius.

Ah well, doesn't everybody. What a rat though, she'd been through Six Winters & Matt had been sunning himself & enjoying the high life in Mauritius next to the pool & drinking Rum Cocktails.[biggrin]

Heard it many times? Some truth in it then.? As with all these awards, it's not what you know, but who you know. I will not say they do not deserve it. But how wide was the net cast.
