This not only impacts directly on the fishing community it will also have a detrimental "flow on" effect on tourism which is a Major industry in the NT and it will cost thousands of jobs.

Jan 26th is when the first fleet arrived and it is the day that Governor Arthur Phillip raised the union jack in Sydney cove, NOTHING to do with Captain Cook whatsoever.
So Jan 26th IS the anniversary of modern day Australia and changing that date to "Mollify" a few disgruntled members of our population is simply ludicrous and changing the date of "Australia Day" would render it pointless.

Without Cook we would probably be speaking French. My point is it has everything to do with Cook. When Phillip raised the flag, he didn't raise it over Australia. Australia Day on the 26th IS pointless. I have no sympathy for the proponents of " invasion Day", that's history, you can't change that. When our founding Fathers declared Federation in 1901, if they wanted to have 26th Jan. as our foundation day, they would have declared it. It would be like the USA declaring their National day as when the Pilgrims landed at new Plymouth. Just my thoughts, feel free to disagree.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Not disagreeing with them getting the award just wondering if they’ve done much outside their day to day work.
Same as you weeds. They performed an amazing feat of bravery and endurance but it was just a single event not the culmination of a life long effort in rescue etc.

The other candidates have been active in their fields of endeavour for years performing service for the community in one way or another.

While I am very happy for them but I feel that one of the other candidates should have been the recipient. I think they were uncomfortable with receiving the award.
    Cheers,

The Yanks chose the day they want to celebrate and we chose our day to celebrate.

And where are the First Nation Tribes in the USA today.

They have nothing compared to what we, the tax payers of Australia, fork out for the upkeep of our "first nations" and First Nation Tribes in the USA have a fraction of the land rights that Australia has given to our "first nations".

A date decided by the Australian people, through their elected representatives. As long as we celebrate a random English man stepping on our soil and claiming Terra Nullis [ think that's it] we will always exclude a large portion of our population. Like it or not, until our indigenous people are made to feel included in the Australian story, we will always have this division. And radicals from both sides will take advantage of this division. I don't want my grandchildren to be having this conversation. As distasteful as it may be for some, we must find a way . Just my thoughts, if we can't do this, I fear for the future of this country.

Far be it it for me to think it’s was all done and dusted ,, but haven’t we already apologised and compensated etc for all this already ?? There was/is,, I thought,, no more reconciliation to be done. Just how much do we have to do to be “in the clear” so to speak before people leave it alone and get on with the job of making the country great. What’s the price??

While Australia gives agitators a reason to stand on their soap box, it will be never ending. All most of the indigenous people want is a job, to work with dignity, a roof over their head, and an education for their children. The only stories mainstream Australia hears about indigenous Australia are the bad ones, so the right wing red necks can point the finger and say, see, we told you so. Right wing, left wing, curious descriptions. I've always felt if you are right wing or left wing, all you do is fly around in circles, going nowhere. How long? So long as indigenous Australians have the family history passed down word of mouth about what they perceive as wrong doing , which I will not go into, it will go on. How long has the Irish " problem " gone on? And please don't tell me about how you lived in a town where there was a problem with the " blacks", been there done that. [ not directed at you, chops] This is a problem that must be sorted, to the satisfaction of all , otherwise we have the examples of Rhodesia and South Africa hanging over us. Once again, just my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
