Perhaps a simple approach, but would hopefully focus the mind of the greedy - caught first time over extracting = fine, second time = forefeit 100% of water allocation.
Honesty is not hard, unless the system rewards the dishonest
Morning Rick. (insert wavy smilie here)
Yes, I guess you would have known that type of jerk as well. Seemed to be quite commonplace in the greedy 80s especially.
PS. M-Day today. OOPS! Going OT.![]()

Problem seems to be the regulators are not enforcing the rules.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Maybe, but I suspect simply that enforcement from Sussex St is a bit difficult (might get my suit dusty - and the flies!). See Hanlon's Razor. (Hanlon's razor - Wikipedia)

I think there is a possible solution far cheaper than tunnels , diversion dams pumps etc
Simply stop....I mean seriously stop all irrigation from the Murray - Darling basin.
No new licenses at all......new licenses are still being approved for cotton growing in southern NSW.....total madness.
My solution?
Make the growers go to the available water.
This is how the problem actually started. There was available water from the Murray - Darling and in the earlier part of the 20th century it was perfect for Australias 5 million population.
There was no agribusiness , just family farms producing beautiful fruit and vegetables . They were eaten fresh , not cold stored.
So , where is this available water? We all know. Lake Argyle. Ord River Dam.
The govt could....if it's parliamentarians where strong enough.... recognise the problem and offer substantial benefits for industry especially agribusiness to move up north. Massive flow ons would occur to support the businesses. Machinery , housing , transport .....it just goes on forever.
There are already a substantial number of irrigators in the area and the output is very high and successful. In terms of land usage and water usage , the area is hardly touched.
We are much smarter than we used to be and we can make bold moves into areas like Lake Argyle (which is artificial anyway)without causing environmental damage.
This whole concept could be put into place over a 5-10yr period which would take the pressure off our inland river systems and the rivers can flow naturally.
The govt already gives tax and fuel concessions for big business , give them more , hell , give them the land....it's not being used.
Kunnunarra would become a city , a proper domestic Aerodrome would be built , not the joke they have , Industry would move in , new roads built and both WA and NT would prosper significantly.
And our rivers could resume their natural flow and beauty.
I could go on.
