I went to my local IGA today. Does that make me a shoppinglist?

so, how did the cliffs of dover, eventuate ?
Well, according to my good friend google, like this.
Cliffs are simply a product of erosion; the sea erodes at sea level, and if the erosion rate is sufficient to remove the material from the bottom faster than it is provided by slumping or falls you end up with a near-vertical cliff face. The cliffs at dover are chalk deposits laid down during the Cretaceous period - the last of the three periods in the mesozoic, during which Dinosaurs dominated. They are receding at an average rate of about 1 cm per year; it being a relatively resistant rock (although vulnerable to chemical weathering). The height of the rocks is a product of both sea level change (which has decreased on the order of hundreds of meters since these rocks were laid down) and isostatic equilibrium - whereby ice-shelf loading and unloading has resulted in the uplift of material in the last few tens of thousands of years in Northern Europe.Combine with this the fact that there was a land bridge between the mainland and the UK until just a few thousand years ago and you can come to realise that modern landforms are really quite ephemeral features.
Just before I was born:rolleyes: the English Channel was blocked with land reaching across to mainland Europe which eventually gave way, ripping apart the Limestone structure which is apparently identical to the French side of said Channel. The excellent grape growing soils now existing in the Southern Counties of Britain are making the UK one of the better Wine making regions of Gt. Britain. Whoever would have thought that was possible?
There is an excellent book, named of all things.... "The English Channel" by Nigel Calder which is worth a read.
A journey by his Ketch from Ushant up & down both sides of the Channel describing the history & features of the English Channel.
