    Falkland Islands Landrovers....and stuff.

Just came back from the Falklands.

when I got off the ship I was a little disappointed and expected to see hundreds of Land Rovers.

there were many but are being overtaken by Mitubishi Tritons , Pajeros and Ford Rangers.

Most Defenders on the road are **** buckets, but I saw 2 brand newies on a car sales 'lot'.

the locals btw are about 98% poms , have lived there all their lives , are offended by tourists off cruise ships walking down their residential streets....

speaking to a few of them about new Land Rover product most couldn't give a **** and won't be able to afford them

when a cruiseship comes in , which is approx 300/year the locals dont mind charging $500 for a days touring in their ****ty defenders but they do take you to the best spots on the island to see wildlife.

the place has a lot of naval history which you would expect and a number of monuments to those who lost their life in the war in 1980-82.

in 1980 I was in Australia's quick reaction force based in Malaysia and we were placed on standby to attend should the British have requested our assistance......I am so glad we weren't.....it is really a desolate place.....I dont recall seeing trees

British Naval Warships regularly make port as do regular supply ships from the motherland.

It is interesting to be talking to pure English speaking people in a region where they are surrounded..vis Argentina...where only Spanish is spoken.

There is still civil unrest there against Argentina and they are trying to totally ban Argentinian aeroplanes from landing there.

255 British Military Personnel died in the war and the logistics were huge. There really wasn't enough time to follow it all while we there.

It is windy and can be dreadfully cold , we got caught in a hailstorm while walking with no cover anywhere , had my drize-a-bone jacket on all day.

anyway we had a nice time there, and yes, the Landrovers are a dying breed there.

I was a little tacker during the Fawklands War and lived in Ilchester near Yeovilton in the UK it was the Fleet Air Arm HMS Heron base for helicopters and the RN Harriers. Got given loads of surplus gear including flight suits from a family friend David Morgan. He was awarded a DSC for his efforts.

    Sea Harrier Pilot Wins DSC

Was pretty cool place to grow up seeing harriers and chinooks practicing with slung loads of Landys.

    yeah thanks for that reference.

I did see that book on sale in one of the tourist shops there, it was well over 32quid. We worked it out on the current exchange range and it did not compute. something stupid like $84aud.

hopefully when swmbo finishes compiling her photos I might have a couple of my favourites to put up
