I am 3 months into applying for an invalid pension and have been advised (By Centrelink) to apply for the dole to get a few quid while I am waiting for that pension to get approved So I KNOW what is involved in getting the dole.
I am eligible for the Old aged pension in 14 months But I am in limbo after suffering a devastating injury to my left arm/hand that left me with NO option for work and who wants to employ a 64 year old with a stuffed up arm anyway.
YES you have to jump through hoops to get a quid from the government and you get stuffed around heaps But that's OK because it sorts the wheat from the chaff
It's not FREE money as some poor Bastard has to pay for it (Via Taxation) so IF you are asked to attend an interview or do any other task you bloody well do it and don't "Whinge" about it.
I am so sick of people whining and moaning about getting penalised for Not meeting their obligations when on the dole when it isn't that hard to comply.
    End of Rant

Hope your disability application is successful as it sounds like a genuine injury.
It can certainly be hard for older people to get work even though they are often very reliable experienced staff.
Last time I checked about two-thirds of applications for the disability pension were being rejected, but I'm not sure of the current figures.
I'm eligible to apply for the aged pension as of today but won't be for a while as I'm still working.
I hope you succeed. Good luck!

Heard today of a bloke who was refused a disability pension even though he was so blind he had been refused a driver's licence plus he had a permanent arm injury. How many jobs are there for semi-blind blokes with one usable arm?
Apparently there is a suspicion they reject most people to discourage them in the hope they'll give up and get a job anyway or apply for the dole instead.
Hope that doesn't happen to you.

A Judge declared me medically retired, Pretty hard to argue against that.

Centrelink will assess your level of disability on the scales they use. You need to be assessed at 20 or more points on one scale to be eligible. Judges opinion is nothing to do with Centrelink but may be useful if your claim is declined and you appeal.

Disability Blind Pension is cut and dried. Your level of visual acuity is xx/yy then you are visually impaired and get a DSB. If not that impaired then you don't. It was not unusual to find DSB's still holding a driver's licence, and, frighteningly, still driving.

    Hmmmm
So a Bureaucrat is more qualified than the two differant orthopaedic specialists and my GP that have given me my medical reports and dissability assessments AND a judge?
Funnily they Have just now approved a Newstart claim that I was advised to put in recently despite me saying that I will be unable to work more than 15 hrs a week.
So despite the incredibly unhelpful and inept people I have had to deal with regarding this and the many trips into town attending interviews, various phone calls and filling in masses of paperwork they have approved a payment that is Not applicable to my situation, A Very ODD bunch that Mob at Centerlink.

Hope Newstart will not be your only income as it is so low it is difficult to survive on, thanks to the belief of some that people who apply for government support are lazy bludgers who must be punished. Obviously that's not true in your case.

actually it is easy to argue against.
that was a state judge/magistrate and the ruling would apply to state based issues.

centrelink is federal jurisdiction and a different set of rules apply.

having said that, i hope it goes smoothly for you
