    How can this be allowed?
We have no public transport here, nearest big towns are 75 km east or west.

The way I understand it, those on the dole must apply for x amount of jobs a month. I'm assuming your town has limited jobs available. So, what jobs are these people applying for? Here's another thing My son has been looking for work for ages, doing the right things, getting frustrated by the bull**** Centrelink and certain job providers put on. He found a job , casual, 4 hours a day, 4 days a week. He was happy, saying " I'm finally away from those arseholes at Centrelink." Not so. It's good in one way, not so in another. Because he works casual only 4 days a week, he is still entitled to Centrelink benefits. Because of this he must apply for 5 jobs a month. He went to his job provider, said what's the point of this, I love working where I am, I have been told by the big Boss they are happy with me, and are prepared to put me on permanent when they can, what if someone really looking for a worker rings and invites me for an interview? If I refuse the job, would you cut my benefits? Probably, was the reply. Son said he would love to tell Centrelink they can have their benefits, but 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, casual, just doesn't cut it.

In my humble oppinion Centerlink are idiots!
We have 99% casual staff but they all work max casual hours, some plus a bit.

Centerlink insits they go to Centerlink interviews even if the fall during rostered time.

So, instead of working & earning they miss a couple of hours pay to attend an interview or they loose their other benifits. Not to mention it leaves me short staffed.

I have phoned Centerlink to try & get staff out of these interviews, No Way, amoungst other things it's to check there hours & ernings & if they are happy at work. They would earn more & be happier if they were actually at work instead of silly interviews.

I have had a few blow ups at centerlink when they are mucking my staff about, they probably have a big red flag against my name & phone number.

Generally speaking it's not Centrelink that are the idiots - they only try to follow the rules set by the REAL idiots in their ivory tower in Canberra. Job Services case managers spend a LOT of time battling the stupidity of the Centrelink rules and guidelines.
Granted there are a few people in Centrelink who have the brains of an Emu though.

someone told me, the cost of administering centrelink, overheads, etc etc.

it would be cheaper to do away with the system and give every aust citizen 30k per year. universal income.

i dont agree with the principle of universal income, but if its better than the curretn system, then im all for it.

Aaaah, yes that inscrutable China man, Sum Wun. He was busy during my time in the military. No one could track him down, we assumed he was a Chinese spy.

If you have that much work for them why don't you do the right thing and put them on permanent full time with award conditions and get them off the dole and out of the taxpayers pockets or like many employers you like to have casual workers subsidised by Newstart.

Such a classic story. ...Putting profit before people always ends in tears. Yet our dominant culture/society values profit more highly than anything else. No wonder living on a pittance is favouable for those who believe in a more equitable system. ...Winner takes all growth capitalism can’t cry poor when increasing numbers need social security as a result of their ‘efficiencies”. Afterall it’s the ultimate aim and hypocrisy of big business - get rid the payroll and profits will look like they’re going up.

You don’t agree with universal income, but if it’s better you do agree with it?
