Today's Rover Adventure

Off to CJ's to work on the Project.

About 5 km from John's on the M7 doing 100 kph I noticed that the Disco was just a little vague in the back end. I had turned the radio up loud so I listen to the news above the diesel and the wind noise. When I turned the volume down there was a rumble coming from the left rear. First thought was that I'd done a bearing...then I thought maybe the wheel is coming off 8O

Pulled over and sure enough the rear wheel was within a couple of threads of coming off the studs. 8O 8O 8O

Tightened the nuts up sufficient to get to CJ's and on removal the wheel revealed damaged threads on the studs halfway along and the holes in the wheel flogged out :roll:

There was enough undamaged thread on the studs to fit the spare and so we headed off to Land Vehicle Spares for five new studs and a few nuts.

When we arrived I noticed a 88" S3 Game and parked along side saying to CJ that I would have one of those and that it was just like the one that simongenet had. We had both met Simon and his family at the first NSW AULRO get together on the Wollondilly a couple of years ago.

We got out of the Disco and sure enough it was Simon.

Simon still looks in here regularly.
The Game was there for a rego renewal inspection.

So armed with a few modest dollars worth of studs and nuts (thanks to Brian, George and Claude) we went back to CJ's and removed the rear hub calipers and axle and replaced the studs in an hour and a half. Rear pads are due for a change and a new wheel is required.

So if there is a lesson here make sure your nuts are tight.

Yr a very lucky man it didn't come off at 100K's!!!!

Had you done work on it recently?

One of my mates lost a 35" simex last year at 80K's the tyre went thru 4 lanes of traffic and just missed a car traveling in the other direction!!! We had done the nuts up the night before with a rattle gun!! We were also told it was common for landrover to loose wheels on the passenger side due to the rotation direction..... I always chk my wheel nuts with a breaker bar!!

You're telling me...the wheel had the valve and stem replaced a month or two back and I trusted that tyre place had done the job properly. Needless to say I used my breaker bar today and will do so everytime from here on end.

Gee that suxs you would think a tyre place would tighten em up enough!!!

Goes to show if you want something done properly you gotta do it yrslf!!

same thing happened to us in the uk when we had new wheels put on the 90

driving home after an off road trip the day after just about to turn into our road and the car started to shake violently, luckly we where only going about 10mph

got out of the car and the wheel was almost off had lost two wheel nuts and the others where being held on by the minimal of thread..........

we were also lucky i think

Had this happen in an Austin 1800 20 years ago.

That was the smallest breakdown of the trip.

Overheating, oil, fires, suspension, flat tyres...

I heard a couple of years ago I heard that my mum made a special trip out to the NRMA servo North of Hornsby to thank them for helping us along the way.

Not my car, I was the passenger and the wallet.

Lucky escape, scared the crap out of me when it happened.

Ah, and it was a mechanic not tightening up the wheelnuts.

Mahn, what kind of wheel?

I have one brand spanker steel Disco rim (white) but it does have a brand spanking new tyre fitted. I want to sell both.
