No, Ian. I was in the pits at the RNA when one of the Bill Kelly pit crew went the knuckle on Dick Brown. Len Brock was a bit handy as was Ron Wanless. I was in the pit lane at Talladega in 1978 as a guest of Smokey Yunick when Smokey got in a shouting match with one of the France family that ended in fisticuffs. Oval track racing tends to be a bit more robust than Formula 1 where disputes are more like powder puffs at ten paces.

Ahh, Mr Wanless, enterprising, robust, active and no doubt a few more non-complimentary adjectives could aptly be attributed to him.
I don't know how it happened but his short 60 tonne weigh-bridge at Oxley always worked in his favour. I still managed to spin it off the dial, with both ends.

I've seen better fights down at the old Sandgate RSL [ RIP] on grab a boiler dance nights.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

By Christ, he could fight and drive a race car. Do you remember at Bathurst when Kevin Bartlett was the hot shoe and tried to rule the roost? He gave Ronny a nudge in a corner and half spun him. Ron didn't take this from speedway champions let alone from a roundy round driver. Ron got the hammer down, caught up with Bartlett and showed him how fencing was played on the speedway. Into the fence and out of the race. When Bartlett got back to the pits in full bad temper and mouthing off wanting to know who fenced him and telling all what he was going to do to the offender. Everyone thought this will be good. Bring your camera. Bartlett is going to bash Ron Wanless. Someone told him to take a chill pill as Ron could bash **** out of him, his pit crew, and his family without stopping for smoko.

People still sit up and listen to him, especially at the speedway.

I often have a chat with him, he is nearly always smiling.

He will pull up and have a chat with a couple of us there and soon there is a large group around him, all wanting to hear what be has to say.

He goes down the pits every meeting, talks to all the drivers.....and gives some of them a little bit of needed advice.

He also talks to the junior ranks and really encourages the young girls starting out.
