Any conscripted Vietnam veterans here? Somethings right up my nose.

Ex deputy PM Tim Fischer has penned a paper about conscription. One thing that stood out was that someone played God when selecting conscripts.

"I reiterate and emphasize not all registrants whose birth dates were drawn were called up in the twice yearly ballots (even allowing for health and other declared non call up or exempt categories), so it appears some person within the system played God big time. " Tim Fischer, Ex deputy Prime Minister. Full story in Walrus. This makes so bloody angry.

I remember them calling out birth days or months out on the wireless when i was a kid. I was so scared when they called out mine but i was still too young. I remember being so scared. My parents would use this fright i had as discipline. They would threaten to call them up and lie about my age. I didnt know any better.

The first AIF were all volunteers, two referendums for conscription were voted no. I joined the Navy in 1964, looking at Mr Fischers paper I would have been conscripted in 1965. Does your emphasis on the word mean you don't understand the system. When did you join?

Well Bob, I did often wonder about the veracity of the draw.

The only man I knew whose birth Day was same as mine ,was one year prior, now what are the mathematical odds of that. And certainly in RAE ,there were not any high bred ,exclusive schooled, sappers crawling around in the mud of Indo China

I missed the ballot by joining early, in retrospect , like winning the lotto. In Mr Fischers paper, only 14 men were jailed for refusing the ballot. Out of the many hundreds of thousands in the ballot, that is extraordinary. Goes a bit against the anti-war movement of the time.
