Years ago, I bought some gasket paper.
I could only buy it by the meter, and I got a solid amount (AKA lifetime supply) of an oil jointing gasket paper.
I'm doing a change out of a water pump, and need a gasket. I'm considering making it out of the oil jointing paper.
Any idea if this will be suitable?

Automotive- My other car... The bloody Nissan 300zx.
Bought an OE water pump 18mths and <2000km ago. Now has a bent shaft as the radiator fan is wobbling and pulling itself into the harmonic balancer. I'm certain I stuck to the belt deflection specs for the alternator, but something has gone awry.
It's one of those annoying jobs, pulling it all back down to the timing belt just for the water pump.
It has just had a bit more love thrown its way... new engine mounts, new coilovers and some adjustable suspension bits, a new tailshaft, and 4.11 diff gears... chasing the bugs out of this lemon one bolt at a time it seems.

I've found that old gasket paper (I also have a lifetime supply) dries out and hardens, might be an idea to hit it with a bit of hylomar spray or similar.
That too, is a product I have a lifetime's supply of
I came to the realisation that last time I added a bit too much silicone when mounting it, so may as well develop the skills of gasket making.

Ah, gasket making.
One of the first things we of the Fridgie Fraternity learnt from day 2. How to properly sweep the workshop floor & tidying benches was day 1.
Scissors, Wad Punches, Curved snips, tiny tin snips etc as you couldn't buy ready made punched out off the shelf stuff in days of yore & there were lots of differing olde head, valve plate & service valve gaskets to be made.
Get to the last cut & you buggered it up so "Start again, Son". When fitting, we used refrigeration oil to coat them with. Caltex White Oil it was. We also used it as a Brylcreem substitute.
Explains a lot does that.
Don't know about the Pharma name though probably a modern name for it but...Details – Caltex Lubricants

Made some service valve gaskets about six weeks ago for an 06E Carrier discharge service valve.
My little straight and curved Gilbow snips come in handy.
Can you even buy them nowadays?
Being of a younger generation I never partook in the Brylcream in the hair thingy.
When I went to tech I had hair down to my collar.
Damn.
I actually had hair.....![]()
non hardening hylomar, permatex, loctite or aviation gasket sealer #3

coat the gasket evenly on both sides (I normally paint one side on the bench put it on the item paint the up side and then assemble holding it in place with 2 bolts or the dowls if fitted.
