we used to be able to have respectful debates on here that lasted for weeks and weeks until those with very narrow views on both sides of the spectrum became much less respectful of other people views.

too many have the view these days, that if people don't align with your particular view of the world they are viewed as being racist hateful and abusive or they take it as a personal affront.

never going to work in an open forum as the vast majority of people don't want to see it, much less have to be subjected to it popping up in their news feed when they log on

sadly many don't see facts as facts, they only see what ever bias they want to inflect on those facts with a view to their own agenda and world view

prime example is people shooting their mouths off saying others are abusive and hateful without having ever been in the area to see how it is run, perfect example of that bias, go figure

    thus CA was begat...

to be frank, it not only grates, but it wears a bit thin over time, esp when you have gone out of your way to accommodate some that seem to be the most intolerant

    /my 2 cents

Keeping politics and religion out of general discussion on AULRO makes sense. However I also believe that certain cultural and social topics are wrongly confused with political and religious topics. Sweeping these under the carpet in a private forum goes against the importance of open public discussion. Subjects such as racial diversity, discrimination based on gender or sexuality, mental health are all subjects I believe should be openly, respectfully and publicly discussed.

IMO, in the context of AULRO it comes down to whether the forum is about only the mechanics of Land Rovers, or also about the cultural context in which these vehicles exist. I’m interested in both, but many don’t seem to be. Land Rovers are cultural icons in my view, which require more than mechanical knowledge to navigate. The Australian cultural context, it’s history and future are inextricably linked to the means by which we travel this country, particularly in terms of vehicles which are designed to do so across a diversity of terrain and which define our relationship to where we live.

As demonstrated by the strength of the wider communities reaction in support of respectful discussion around many of your topical posts, I believe it would be the right thing for AULRO to not shy away from such important public discussion.

However as I’ve stated previously I will be guided by the mods and will keep my discussion to Land Rover specific related discussion until further notice.

    Cheers, Zeros.

Soon as you hear someone say, 'You must have rocks in your head to believe that', you know you're dealing with an arrogant person who is too mentally lazy to consider other ways of thinking than their own.

Cheers, I totally respect your position and the difficulties of managing such a forum.

At the same time I firmly believe we’re all responsible for managing the content of public discussion for the greater good, rather than submit to the will of the prejudiced few.

It’s important that the ugliness of prejudice is not allowed to prevail, as this is exactly its aim - to dominate discussion through threatening means. I understand that avoiding certain topics is one way to go, but at the same time it means for example we can’t discuss the extraordinary cultural diversity across this continent - a major reason for many to own and travel in their Land Rovers. It’s a shameful indightment on our national culture that this and other topics related to Land Rover ownership must be avoided due to the views of a few.

Prejudice is being stamped out in many areas of Australian mainstream cultural life such as football for example. It would be powerful for a leading motoring forum to do the same. At the same time I totally understand the moderating involved and that particularly when voluntary this is a huge and complex task.

Thank you for all your great work Incisor and Mods, I’m sure you all truly go above and beyond with AULRO everyday. Much appreciated.

    Zeros.

I can see it now .................. a vision...................

Emerging from the mist. A large man on a rearing white stallion, banner aloft, no, it's a white ensign. No shining Armour here he's wearing an old rugby jersey and waving a large and well used sword. On it a worn and tarnished emblem, a talisman in the form of a simple green oval with Defender inscribed in faded gold.

Music faintly in the background slowly rising to a crescendo. Is it 'Onward Christian Soldiers', no, nothing that trite, an old Ted Egan poem of identity and honour perhaps or was it that opening music from 'Chariots of Fire" but it fades away, a tease ....................

Garlic clove with wooden stake decoration (and Bar) worn with pride our warrior enters the domain of Sodom and Gomorrah in his quest for 'Truth, Justice and the Landrover way', or is it really just an old man tilting at windmills ?

    Only time will tell ..............................

Look at the bright side The general forums loss will be CA's gain.

I take it you are not a fan of satire. However I do have memories of abusive and hateful attacks, pre Ca. Abusive attacks took the place of mature discussion. Probably why CA may be an alternative universe , in this modern World . Believe me, I appreciate your patience, over time. One question, with respect. How you say CA was begat does not make sense. Those who had to put up with the rubbish that went on then, know otherwise. I think you had the wisdom of Solomon, to work out how to make the best out of a bad situation. That's why I will always defer to your wisdom. One other point. When I started on this forum, I was roundly abused for cut And paste , to make a point. Now everyone does it. Go figure. AULRO would not exist without you, and a few good men. I acknowledge that. And respect it. And thank you for that fact.
