Ha ha , no, I do all sorts of stuff for a very wide range of clients.

I guess I'm really interested in peoples opinions into whether the watch fix guy's battery tester is really faulty and he doesn't know, or he's 'upselling'.

Well the cheap model of these watches starts at about $150 for a kids one..

My first one was nearly $400 and I reckon I added another $150 to that with the second.

Despite their bling image with the latest rappers and insta favs, they are actually a good watch! Have a great after sales in my opinion.

I wonder if the brands/quality of batteries available to these repair mobs are limited or they are knowingly not completing the job for repeat business.

Couldn't find them anywhere. They were tan in colour.

Now I think of it, i reckon Jack Absalom used to use them too.

My grandfather had one of those bands, he was a miner. No battery watches down there only manual wind up jobs. I had one for a short time when I worked in heavy industry and yes the stench after a time got too much.

"Upselling" like that is not really going to do him any favours at the end of the day.

Why not do him a favour & tell him what you have told us, he may not realise it is stuffed/out of calibration, & surely there must be one of his mates that could double check it for him. Then again, they may both be crooks.

It is not as though he'd be making a squillion out of batteries & being a low voltage tester it is not impossible it could be out of calibration.

Lets be fair here, I've killed G shocks, pathfinder, Doxa a suunto and a Timex and all of them the hardened stuff.. I get maybe 18 months from a watch If Im lucky.

the best watch I had was a casio solar AWGS-10 from memory... solar, digital analog with the usual timer, stop watch, dual times alarm and hourly beeper with backlight.

Made in SA as well. Well, that says a lot.

Btw, if your gran'pappy was a bit posh & to impress his mining mates he could have had a Self-winding Watch.

Still got mine all these years on & it still works & keeps good time although it spends it's life now in a drawer, sans leather stench maker, of course.

I reckon the last one of those bands I had was in 1977. Haven't seen one for years, and yes they do get smelly......

No thanks I can do without that smell. I do have his self winder that he would wear when not at work. And yes it too lives in a draw but take it out and give it a shake and away it goes, keeps good time too.

If he knows his watches and knows you've paid a three figure sum for it and the thing won't go with a battery that tests 'good' and needs a new motor ($60 to $80) or a service ($?) and there's maybe some sentimental attachment (N/A to me) I can see people paying the money to get the thing sorted.

Then to 'fix' it he just puts in a fresh battery. There's a bit of an earn there.

Just thinking, as you do, Ray, a self winding would be no good for a couch potato watching TV all day as the only wind up would be when he/she reached for a stubbie or a sarny.

I'm not sure if that would be sufficient to keep it going before bedtime. Problems, problems, all these problems technology brings with it.
