Almost all Defenders have been manuals, as befits utility vehicles. There is, however no particular reason why they could not be automatic, and as Landrover appears to be abandoning the utility market in Australia at least, I would not be surprised if automatics became available, and in fact more common than manuals, if the Defender survives. As far as I know, all sold in Australia have been manuals, but there are a few conversions about. The fitting of traction control and hill descent control just about removes any advantage of manuals over automatics, although automatics would have to have good cooling to stand prolonged use at low speeds with heavy loads (and often overloading and unsympathetic drivers) in high temperatures, such as agricultural or mining use in the interior in summer.

My 130 auto, After market fitting now has 126,000 km and the box is still going strong. It has the ZF 4 speed in it with custom stall converter.

Yes, yours is an example that it is perfectly feasible - but you live in a relatively cool climate, probably rarely overload it, and, I suspect, are a sympathetic driver, since you have to pay for repairs yourself!

Yea I do like to baby it most of the time. I'm to scared of destroying it by doing something stupid but I also work when off road as she seems to love low range.

Followed a link to a US rover parts site showing off a Disco with around 7" lift... and this is on the front page which i haven't seen before...

Is this a mock-up or real??? It's titled "Defender New"

This is probably the most realistic option i've seen for an update.
