I heard him in a recent interview say that was his greatest regret. The claim has been taken out of context because he failed to clarify it properly. What he intended to say was that there should be no economic reason for children to live in poverty.
RIP the Honourable Bob Hawke.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
RIP Bob Hawke, a great man.

Said on the introduction of Family Allowance Supplement (FAS). An extra payment to low income parents. In an ideal world responsible parents would use this to support their dependant children. Unfortunately in this real world far too many parents used this gift for booze, tobacco, drugs, poker machines, etc. The idea was sound.

Apparently he went off script when he said that and didn't explain it properly.
Quite relevant now that three million Australians are living below the poverty line.
Did anyone have a Hawke lager in his honour? I've never tried it.
John it shouldn't be a worry, I liken the end to be like experiencing having an Anesthetic. One second one is alive & the next, nothing. That's it, kaput, Finito. Anything to get away from Eevo's jokes.
What is there to worry about if one has their personal affairs in order? I know, I know, unfinished business, friendships & projects etc. I don't think for one second one would sit up in bed & with a last gasp wonder whether one did actually re-tighten up the S2A wheel nuts to 80lb/ft or not.
Have just this last fortnight have had a life changing experience but seems I beat old Nick once again. When your number is up it's up though .
Latest images of Hawkey show him with a pint of beer & thick Cigar in his hands. Not a good recipe for a life over 89 I reckon.
It was Hawke lager, apparently, a boutique brew I've never seen. Must be a Sydney thing.
As the nurse said about my old father's smoking just before he passed, what does it matter at his age? Let him enjoy it while he can.
