Not my idea, and I'm sure I read the reason on this site 2 or 3 years ago.

The B&W skin stripes are an evolutionary heat management thing for zebra.

The stark colour contrast creates many small air vortices in sunlight all over their bodies that draws heat away from the flesh.

On trivia involving the name Dorothea, in the TV show "Endeavour" the actor who played Morse, John Thaw's daughter Abigail Thaw appears in every episode IIRC, as the journalist Dorothea Frazil.
