He was an engineer of some sort and worked on desalination equipment on the boats.

So how did someone from the British navy end up in the desert in Australia which is a long way from what would normally be considered the natural environment for the navy? Seems this type of equipment was an area of specialization that was reserved for the navy. So anywhere it was required it was the navy who were sent to set up and run the equipment

Friend of my father spent at least a year there as well. He was doing National Service in the Australian Army and this was where was sent. Still talks about his time there. Reckons it was a great place for a young bloke. All that cutting edge technology and he as a young pleb right in among it and given responsibility at a level that was well above pay grade. Seems there are few things in life as exciting as firing off a large rocket

Why? You only need to push a button & a Sequence Timer does the rest. You hope. I don't think anyone actually goes onto the Launch Pad & uses a Bryant & May to light a long fuse anymore.

I should think the UG Water would be pretty crap & a Desal Plant would be essential

Desal was very specialised gear back then.
UG water is highly saline in the WPA.

We had 3 large RO/Desal plants running full time when on the WPA and had to include some additional monitoring of Isotopes to ensure the water remained potable.

I’d shower with it, but never drink it!

Almost every drop of my shower and drinking water was Desal for several years, even on my first old baby Vampire. I wonder if that explains some things. I wonder if that explains some things. I wonder if that explains some things. I wonder if that explains some things????

Just a bit, as you seem to now have a vocabulary of about 7 words.

But you weren't getting yours from the UG water table, just water that millions had ****ed, ejaculated & crapped in, world wide.

PH would have been good though. Possibly.

Far more advanced cities such as Perth W.A have been reliant on desal water for a long time.

I'm surprised the lessor cities around Australia and the world haven't gone this way.

Well Adelaide sort of has like some other states. It was built a few years ago at humongous expense for the if, but, when or maybe times. As far as I am aware publicly, it has not been used to supply water in Summer to Adelaide.

It apparently gets a gig now & then to keep the Moths away but to the best of my knowledge hasn't been run in anger, yet. It is built on the old PRA Refinery site at water's edge at Hallet Cove.

If you live in Melbourne or any part of Tasmania or NZ you wouldn’t be surprised at all. We don’t all live in a desert.

    Hi,
But the irony of Tassie 's recent rains is a stage 1 water restriction.
    Why?
The turbidity of the stream supply is over working the treatment plants, so production is down.
It really makes a good case for a dual supply, being potable and non-potable.
    Cheers

Donkey's years ago an erudite mate told me that every glass of water contains at least one molecule of H2O that was in the mug of hemlock that Socrates drank, due to how rapidly and completely the 'earth' recycles water naturally and the sheer number of water molecules.
