    Worm Farms

Who has a worm farm in their backyard? I have had one for about six years. The original mat on top finally wore out so I bought a new one. This one is four months old and the worms have eaten it to shreds. I am wondering if they need extra fibre in their diet, or is it because I have started putting the grounds from my coffee machine in there and they are high on caffeine?

We gave up on the mat, like yours ours kept getting eaten. It's been like that for the last 10 years or so.
we keep getting soldier fly larvae in the farm, particularly in summer, but that's the only down side.
Our worms didn't take to coffee so we are putting our grounds straight on our citrus trees, they love it.

    Hi all

It's dangerous and risky to have worm farms like that where the worms eat matts. The life cycle of worms is very short. In a year you can have many generations. As they chew though one matt you place on a stronger, thicker matt. The ones that survive the first generation are the ones that can thrive off the stronger matt so the next gen is even more efficient at chewing through matts. So you get a stronger matt again And again they evolve to eat that one. One day they will escape into the wild and everyone in your suburb will start to find their welcome matt being eaten overnight. Today a suburb, tomorrow a city. Don't do it - it's dangerous.

Oh and they will be immune to caffeine as well through evolution.

A big old compost bin with a lid works with no mat for me. I have a few billion of them. A bucket or many more gets devoured daily. A Second one where I do not use the casings on food plants gets the dog poo.

None of those trendy tray things at my place. Its been going for 10 years and I am unable to have it more than 1/3 full due to the ravenous little wrigglers empty it from full in days. The Worm Farm worms do not leave as they like the heat and environment. In my large bin which has no bottom. Heaps of other worms in the garden beds are not the same type and interestingly do not seem to mix even though they could. I need a rat bait station at times. If you are in Maningham area of Melbourne need a bucket full PM me.

We've got a worm farm here, bloody hard little buggers to ear tag but it gets primary producer status for the Hi Lux.

This mob near me makes it, but they don't reveal the pack size on the website.

I have had a so called ‘worm cafe’ for about 10 years. The original mat disintegrated, so these days I buy used hessian potato bags from my local fruit and vegetable outlet. They work well as a cover, and we keep it moist.

I've looked at worm farms a few times but eventually just settled on digging holes in the veg patch approx. shovel wide and deep and then tipping all veg waste from the kitchen in them. The WA sand there is now good dirt after many years and I grow some nice stuff there so it works well. Not big worms but they seem happy.
In the warmer months when stuff breaks down quicker I put it into the compost tumbler along with the grass cuttings and it gets well and truly broken down in the heat.
Seems a simple way of improving the sand.
