quite simply because the guvmint allows it.

their excise is fantastic, something like $1mill / day if it increases 1c/litre. I can't confirm that , it appears to be one of those locked secrets.

$40mil into the coffers each day is enough justification not to do anything on behalf of the population.

even our road service associations say nothing, maybe some kickback?

you cannot change the price of milk, eggs , beer, cigarettes and many other commodities as often as fuel prices change.

Partly owing to the attacks on two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz last week. According to the news email I get every day from GCaptain, oil prices and tanker insurance have been affected.

Yes, but that hasn't had time to flow to local prices yet.
I usually use the local Puma to get the RACQ 4c discount.

    its actually pretty easy...

every cent per liter of fuel the price increases get the GOVT an extra .1c.

the stats for meaningful fuel sales (+/- the reporting margin of error) are here

    Australian Petroleum Statistics | energy.gov.au

for this simple example we'll use automotive LPG in march 2019 from NSW.. which is 59million liters.... (its the first one on the list in the spreadsheet of table 3a)

    .1*59000000=5,900,000c

so for the month of march if the LPG price went up 1c/l from feb the govt netted $59,000 for doing nothing. the numbers for petrol(s) and diesel are all commensurately higher as a larger quantity of those fuels got sold.

and the fuel values are... 370Million liters of petrol(S) and 256Million liters of diesel.

thats still a bucket ton of money AND we've got 6 states/territories to go and that doesn't count the final produce taxed that come off of whatever the industry final rate on taxable fuel cost is OR aviation fuel, or gas, or...... And thats for a 1c/L increase..

370,000 +256000+59000 = $685,000‬ for NSW for a 1c/l on just what you'd expect to find on the bowser at a servo. NSW is about the median of fuel use.
