Scared the Crap out of Myself.

Tuesday night I was really tired so after dinner I went straight to bed.
About an hour or 2 later I woke up, decided to pee, got out of bed feeling really uncomfortable.
While I was standing in the Loo I realised my chest was really painful, I started getting pains down my arms & was having trouble breathing.
Now, as your typical bloke I decided to go back to bed & see if this would pass. It didn't, the pain & being unable to breath just got worse.
I stumbled out of bed staggered to the lounge & gasped for SWMBO to phone the Ambo's.
She asked if I was serious? I made some very rude reply that Yes, I am very serious.

Anyway the Ambo's turn up, shove me in the back & hook me up to some sort of machine, spray horrible tasting stuff in my mouth & tell me it doesn't look like I'm having a heart attack. I take this as good news.
At the hospital the again hook me up to various machines, take what looks like 100lt of blood out of me & shoot me up with an injection.
After 10 minutes they decided I have not had a heart attack but something is definitely wrong & I need to hang about.

I wasn't really happy with this & had started feeling better, so after a couple of hours I discharged myself & got SWMBO to pick me up.
    BIG MISTAKE!
An hour later SWMBO is driving me back to the hospital, huge chest pain & cant take anything but shallow breaths, not feeling good at all.
So they take even more blood, shoot me full of different injections, take a chest X-ray, give me tablets & so on.
After a few hours they tell me I have a really good lung infection & Plurace (spelling?). They give me a big dose of anti-biotics, pain killers & hook me up to yet another machine.

By yesterday afternoon I'm feeling 85% great. They let me come home &, of course, I come straight to work.
This morning I feel even better so I Email my boss I am back at work & all good.
He phones me within a minute of the Email & goes off at me, the boss & I have never cross words so this was a bit of a shock. I have had to promise I will have at least 3 days off next week & send him a definite time frame for holidays to be taken this year for at least 2 weeks & he wants it by the end of next week.

The upshot of all this is:
I am very pleased I did not have a heart attack, like I thought I was.
    I should be less stubborn.
I am now taking a gazillion tablets.
I do have slow down a bit & take a bit more time off, a day now & then doesn't cut it.
I have to get serious about giving up the fags.
    I'm not immortal.
The hospital & Ambos in Doomadgee are great.
The Roadhouse will survive if I'm not here.
My Boss can be a grumpy sod when he wants.

Thanks for sharing Jonesy - you are quite isolated up there you know.

The word you were looking for is "pleurisy" and I hope they fully investigated the other potential problems that can go with it.

We, and, I'm sure, that all your extended family, would be pleased if you can give the ciggies away.

    All the best mate !

I had the same about 4 years back , woke during the night feeling unwell & pain in left arm & felt like some was sitting in chest . The longer I lay in bed the worst I felt , I was having trouble breathing & started to have a panic attack, I had never experianced one before. When the ambos arived did all the tests but could find nothing so as a percausion took me to hospital for more tests & obversation over night. Next morning went for a MRI & stress test & a nother ECG. All good so sent me home & have not experanced the problem since . I put it down to having pinched a nerve in my arm & being in my late 60's I started thinking I was having a hart attack , then went into panic mode which caused me to hipo hipoventilate.
The ambo's told me not to worry about calling them out & if it happens again call straight away it is better to be safe & alive than sorry. All has been good since.

Pleurisy can be really nasty, so take it very seriously. This is a warning to rest and recover. Don't ignore it. Your boss is right. Stop being foolishly brave and listen to your doctor. We want you around here in future.

You’re lucky. I used to work for QLD Ambulance and have worked at Doomadgee many times. I can tell you that getting to heart issues early is the key. After all if something serious is happening they have to organise RFDS to fly you to Mt Isa. It’s not like you’re living in metro Brisbane.

As far as your health goes, follow the advice of the professionals.

GEEZUZ Jonesey! It ain't easy getting olde is it? Glad you made it.

Some years back I had a TIA, (Transient Ischemic Attack) similar to a small heart attack ie. Left side immobilised, can't lift one's feet, can't speak coherently all that crap. A&E job.

A couple of months ago I went for a leak & couldn't walk, Cold Sweat etc. Into Hospital A & E. Usual scans & jabs etc.

Finished up it was a restricted RH Artery & I had a Stent fitted. Been all good since.

I'm not even a fat bastard either.

Nope. You need to do it. Giving them up 15 years ago is without doubt the best thing I've ever done for my health, and I've never had pleurisy, although I did have adult whooping cough.

Look after yourself, and recover well.

One of the joys of living remote is these sort of incidents.
Although we have a hospital &, usually, a doctor they are very quick to fly people out to Mt Isa for medical reasons.
While all this was going on besides being frightened that I was having a heart attack, I was worried that if I went to hospital they would fly me out.
Stupid, I know. But it really worried me.
BTW I have been on to "Quit Line" & have an appointment lined up to get off the fags.
Should be easy, I've been smoking since I was 12, I'm now 60, no sweat??

Did you think the RFDS would give you a One Way Ticket then?
