I was enjoying the extra money by working in Doom. At the time we lived in Mt Isa and I did a lot of relief work through the Gulf of Carpentina providing ‘days off’ relief to the local paramedics. Mornington island, Normanton, Cloncurry, Doom & Karumba. Quite enjoyed my time there.

Nothing is easy about giving up the fags. I did it over 40 years ago when on around 70 a day and less than a dollar pack of twenty. Cold turkey. First week when on the grog I accepted offered fags 4 times but gave them back! How the hell I did it I don't know.
I don't want to put you off trying but for 6 weeks I felt as if I was floating..... really odd.
Should have done it years before but that's the control nicotine has over you.
My dad gave up smoking when he was 52. The day he died.

PS. The upshot of giving up though is I rarely get colds, never feel anywhere near as breathless or "bunged up" in the head and never produce vile phlegm...
Everyone is different. I was 50ish, and had smoked since I was 16. I guess that in my case the fact that I didn't actually LIKE smoking may have helped, but balance that against my preferred smoke, which was unfiltered Camels, or, failing that, US unfiltered Marlboros. What's the point of smoking if you don't get a hit, right?
I tried many times to give 'em up. There were many techniques, including hypnosis. They did NOT work. Then, one night, I decided, with some help from alcohol, to do it. I took one 20 pack, smoked every fag in the pack, woke up feeling terrible, and have not smoked since.
.
I don't suggest that this works for everyone. My understanding is that, after nearly 35 years of smoking, that I actually didn't like it was paramount. I believe that that is the way to do it. Ask yourself, do you REALLY enjoy it. Do you really enjoy smelling like an ashtray. Is that what you want to project to the world?
When I was in the Army, a lifetime ago, we all smoked. I was on 60 a day. I am not moralising here. Do what you want... BUT, food tastes better ( well, it tastes ), wine tastes better, beer tastes better, the first breath of a new day tastes better, your wife ( sorry if I offend. I miss my wife's kiss more than anything I could imagine, but it's gone ) tastes better, and you may live longer, and so may she.
That said, I may regret giving them up now that I am alone, but I don't think so. Perhaps there is someone on my horizon that I wouldn't meet if I still smoked. Because I'd be dead.
GIVE THEM UP. The money alone these days....... Standing behind someone in the queue at the supermarket and their tobacco purchase costs more than my entire trolley is sobering...
Sorry for the rant.

Just a suggestion..... I gave them up about 6 months ago, I’m 63. I was getting through 30/day.
I used Quit4Good which is a non-nicotine based oral strip that you place between your lower lip and gum in the morning. You can continue smoking for 7 days but I found all the desire for one was gone after 3 days. The course lasts 30 days and they do say you MUST complete the full course for total success. I haven’t had one since.
Cost was about $290 I think..... about 5 days of smokes in my case. WELL WORTH IT!

I gave up smoking around 5 years ago . Started at 16 year old . Only smoked port royal rollies. Gave up because I couldn't find an answer to my health issues , so l thought strip myself of everything that I shouldn't have .smokes grog etc. Never looked back. Funny thing is , we have a boys fishing weekend every year up in the high Country 5 days I smoke when I get there and stop when I leave.
The price of fags at the moment would be a big chunk out of the pension if I was a daily..
Pas.
