Well!!![]()
Since no-one wants to talk to me I'm going to take this post elsewhere!![]()
I've already loaded up the front of the D3 with a bar and winch, the roof with a rack and tent, and am about to load up the rear with a bar and twin carriers and a 110l aux fuel tank.
Now, the TARE of the D3 is advertised as 2,432kg max (and since mine is an HSE with nearly all the fruit, then it should be at or close to max).
The GVM is advertised as 3,230kg max. Which leaves a load allowance of 798kg.
Now, the front bar and winch must be around 70kg, the rack and tent are around 100kg and the rear bar with the tyres must be around 50kg; totalling 220kg. Add fuel (including the aux tank) at around 200kg; and me at 77kg and Joan at 58kg; and we're up to 555kg.
That leaves around 240kg for the fridge, water, food and other gear.
What I'm asking those of you who've done some more extensive touring is, have I left my self sufficient allowance for the latter stuff, or am I cutting it too fine??
Mind you, I've gone for weeks carrying my house on my back, so I know how to travel light.

I took a customers D3 over the local weighbridge a couple of months ago. The vehicle has bullbar, driving lights, winch, roofrack, etc. I weigh in at about 115 kg. the front axle loading was only 40 kg under the maximum allowable. With the regular driver and passenger on board it would have been pretty close to being at the maximum front axle loading. Take your Disco over a weighbridge and check the front and rear axle weights, then compare them to the specs in the handbook. Overloading is a big no no, for insurance reasons and legality.
Yeah, As I said, i intend putting it over a weighbridge.
But in you example you don't mention the rear load.
The front max axle weight is 1,450kg; but the rear allows 1,875kg and the suspension (like most vehicles) is set up for the load to mostly go in the rear. That's why my Rooftop tent is set towards the rear of the car and over the rear axle.
I can't remember the exact figures, but if you add up the front maximum axle weight and the rear maximum axle weight, you get a figure greater than the GVM (all figures in handbook). I can only assume therefore, if the front axle is at the highest allowable weight, you can't load the rear axle to the highest axle weight because the GVM will be exceeded. For these particular people it could be a problem because they also tow a large caravan and the trailer ball weight also has to be taken into account.
Yeah, but towing a van, they can put most of their gear in same and re-distribute the weight so it's not so much of a problem.
Maybe so, but large vans can have ball weights of 100 - 300 kgs! Then try putting some passengers in the back seat. Very easy to go over the GVM.
Still, with a load capacity of almost 800kg and a towball download of 350kg, the D3 is better than most of the Jap equivalents!
Jamo,
You have got too much money. Lots of new toys for your rig. Getting closer to maybe moving down your way, maybe. Looking good. Let me know the next decent property (land) that you under value??
